loking for a little advice,considering buying a varmint gun .But seems like everybody I know has a different favorite cal.Hopefully you guys can help me decide.thinking 243 ,223 , 22-250, but one friend says 250-3000.What do you think.Thanks!

I sure am delighted with my Remington "Light Tactical Rifle" (LTR) in .223...it has a heavy barrel, but it's only 20" long so it's not too heavy. An H-S Precision stock, and a great trigger. All in cool tactical matte black.

If your varminting includes bigger varmints (coyotes, wolves, badgers, etc) then the 22-250, 220 Swift(my choice), or even a 243/6mm will be better choices. If it's all small stuff, inside of 300 yards, then a 222 or 223 will do just fine. Regards, Eagleye.
I'll add my 2c. I really like my Savage BTVSS in 223. Very accurate to 300 meters. I haven't shot it at a further distance yet so I can't comment on that. I handload and it really likes a Sierra Matchking 69 gr hp with 25.8 gr of Varget, CCI SR primers. The 2 targets were shot last week at my local range.

I dunno, anything over .223 seems like overkill for gophers in my opinion. I have a sweet Tikka T3 Varmint in .223 with the stainless steel heavy barrel... all 24 inches of it! This rifle is so sweet. My handloaded, 60 grain Sierra HPs cloverleaf at 120 and 200 yards, and the six shot, bottom loading clip, combined with the smoothest bolt action anywhere tell me it's the right rifle for any varmint, because I can load up 75 and probably even 80 grain bullets that my 1 in 8 twist rate can stabilize for the bigger varmints I might want to take, or I can blast the gophers with the little 45 grainers too. It's not the rifle to walk all day in the woods with because of the weight, but man if I set up with a bipod nothing is safe within at least 200 yards (haven't tried it further than that yet as my range only goes out to 200 and change).
The best part is that .223 is SO cheap to shoot even if you don't reload and you still get near that kind of accuracy. 22-250 even though it is a much faster round that is slightly more accurate is way more expensive.

The .22-250 is the love child of the 250-3000. It was created for savages model 99 lever action, and in it's day was the first commercial chambering to break the 3000 fps mark. I belive they used an 87 grain bullet, and although I've never owner one, I think they would make a dandy deer rifle.
