Im looking in the 150 dollar range for a plinker, and have found:

Mossberg plinkster 702
Marlin 795
Remington 597
Savage 64

Which is the best of these rifles? Are ANY of them any good? Which lock back after the last round?

Thanks in advance :)

You know if you wanna semi 22 you should just put the coin in a ruger 10/22. I work at a gun store and hear people complain about there other semi auto 22 but nobody complains about there ruger 10/22, Also on that note I don't have a 10/22 I have a browning buckmark wich is amazing but cost me an arm and a leg.

Are you looking at used prices...because I think all of those guns that you have listed retail for more than $150? They're probably closer to $200, in which case that 10/22, starting at around $239 should be on your list.

I have a Marlin 795 and it is very accurate and reliable, and has the last round hold open. It shoots far better than the two new 10/22"s I have seen lately, and cost me a lot less. S.I.R. has them listed at $147.99

Here's another vote to save up your pennies / beer / pop cans and get a 10/22. I'd pick the Remington off your list though, but would rather have a little Ruger carbine.

+1 for the Marlin 795. I've got two gopher seasons on mine and it was worked flawlessly. It has never missfed, but the last shot hold open starts to fail when the rifle needs a clean. A super light rifle, easy to carry all day.........best one on your list for the money, IMO.

Buy them all ... lol..., I have all those except the mossberg, I might get
another 10/22 just for the hell of it, the last one I sold had feeding problem
from the mag. Out of all of them the one give the least trouble or no trouble at
all is the Marlin795, next would be the savage64.

with 10/22 mags i found out that no matter what brand, some people have had a mag since 1865 and shot 10000000000000 rounds through it without a jam. While others on the same mag jam every single round. Bottom line, they're all inconsistant. My advise? Buy 20 mags, keep 6-8 that work well with your rifle and sell ther rest.

I am open to the 10/22, but i dont want to spend much, as this is just a cheap little side project. Is it that much better than the marlin 795 (i see a few votes for the 795)?

yeah, the 10/22 is probably the best bet. It'll probably suit you as-is for now, it not for good. But if you *do* end up wanting a better gun, then you will already have one that has 9 zillion aftermarket parts to choose from if you feel like spending some more money on it.

I'm very happy with my newly purchased Rem 597 which functions and shoots great. The longer length of the stock is very comfortable vs the shorter 10/22 stock. I've only got 600rds through this one.

I have a 10/22 ($75 pawn shop find:)) and it works great also. I find the stock short. It's also a great plinker and I have done no mods to it. I do have some 25rd mags for it and they work fine (Butler Creek steel lips). About 10,000rds through it.

I also have the old Cooey 64 which is now remarketed as the Savage 64. I don't think any changes have been made to this model mechanically. It also works great but is alittle picky on ammo. Works well with Federal Classic 36gr that come in the bulk pack of 525rd for $16 or so. I find it easier to clean than the above two rifles. At least 10,000rds through this one.

Maybe I'm lucky, but all three have worked fantastic for me. I plan to keep them all. I think you'll be happy with any choice.

cooey 64B

I have one of those cooey 64B rifles that I`m selling. It shoots nicely for its age. (The cooey comes with 2 10 rnd mags and a 3x6 scope, and is in VG condition.)
But I`ll stick to my Squires Bingham M20 that I bought brand new in `86 for $92 :D (I have a 30 rnd clip for it plus the original 15 rnd mag)
Its got at least 20,000 rnds through it and has sucsessfuly dispatched 100s of ontario ground hogs and of late, a couple of hundred alberta gophers.
