I am looking at getting into back into trap and hand thrown targets. Maybe bird hunting as well. I figure mod and IC choke will meet these needs.

Between these two, which is the better buy?

Pleas don't tell me to just spend substantially more money. This is my price range.

That Valmet weighs 7.5lbs. Thats a better weight at the range but I would not want an upland gun that weighs that much.

Buy a shotgun that fits you, not just length of pull, but drop at comb and cast. A shotgun that doesn't fit you, is a poor choice, no matter what the price is.
This is so true. Over the years I've bought two shotguns on line without trying them that did not fit me. My big square head does not fit on a high comb. The 1st was an SKB M500 O/U that ended up getting sold. The 2nd is a Webley and Scott SxS 12bore from Intersurplus. I really do like that shotgun so I had the bite the bullet and sent it to Chris Dawe for adjustment. It ended up costing me a lot more than I planned.

This one, for the same reason of weight. No, I might be a bit of a Fudd but I like simple; double triggers would be my preference; but heck, I did have a "New SKB" back in the '80s. It worked fine! Shot skeet with a double trigger Baikal SxS in 12 ga. and a little Spanish double .410. both had both chokes cylinder and worked great for skeet. Buy the Valmet, have fun, and if you get serious, look for a serious skeet gun.

BTW, I just bought a Shotgun from Interruptus also for a little bit of recreational trap and sporting clays; I went with a double trigger SxS and while I will break no records, I will have fun. LOL, that is the point!!

Sabatti has a relatively short LOP. OK if you have a small frame, not so good otherwise. The Valmet shows the top lever slightly left of center, likely indicative of a high mileage gun.

One could always add a good pad to the Sabatti for the extra LOP and would help with recoil at the range.

Out of the two, I'd lean towards this one.

Just a question, if the OP is talking about using this for Trap, why not look for something that is choked better than imp cyl and mod? I’d be looking for something with mod/full before either of these? Or is that hard to find in these older guns?( forgive my ignorance lol)

they are 500$ guns you get what you get mail order guns he is shooting gravel pit clays
what ever he buys will be what he is shooting

I am not overly familiar with either of those guns but I noticed both are offered in 27.5" and 28" barrels in the the suggested list below when I click those links. That would be my choice as they tend to sight and swing better for me, especially in open fields or clay target shooting. I don't mind a 25" or 26" snap shooting Ruffies over the dogs but a 28" certainly isn't a hindrance in that situation either.

Another issue is balance. Those older designed guns often carry a fair amount of weight in the butt end. A 28" barrel would be more likely to balance between the hands IMO.

I like your IMP CYL/MOD choice over the MOD/FULL option. Any older guns I tried are tighter than advertised with IMP being more like IMP MOD and MOD being basically a modern back bored FULL. Any I have purchased with the MOD/FULL markings ended up being FULL and FULLER. Okay for trap but a real drawback in the bush.

It's "a pig in a poke" regardless of other's opinions as it may not be right for you. That SKB 500 mentioned above as a nonfit, fits me like a glove as do all of the old model SKBs.

I’d sooner go for one of these (for longer barrel and interchangeable chokes):

https://intersurplus.com/products/rizzini-emilio-sideplate-o-u-in-12-ga?_pos=14&_sid=2ebfbe0d1&_ss=r

Or without interchangeable chokes:

If you ever plan on shooting at a club, some have minimum barrel length requirements - often 26”.
And having interchangeable chokes gives you so much greater versatility! Skeet, trap, birding, sporting clays…

Thank you all for your responses. I ended up going with the Rizzini side plate that McGus suggested. The look of it really got me going. I was on the fence about interchangeable chokes but you people are right that it is worth it.

McGus, take pride knowing you cost me $100 bucks. Future me will probably be happy you showed me that one

Gnome75 Glad to hear you were receptive to everyone's input on interchangeable chokes, weight, barrel length etc. and that you grabbed a good option! I hope it fits you well and serves you for a long time to come. Happy shooting!
