40 mm unless you shoot at night; in which case the 50 mm. If you don't mind a few ounces and double the price the 2-10 and 3-15 VX 5 HD are friggen awesome.
Get the 40, can mount it lower and will provide all the light gathering and clarity needed to see well past legal shooting time.

2-10x40 would be just about perfect for a hunting scope.
The 40mm is all you will ever need. I would never consider the 50mm version... not even with a 4.5-14. 50mm = big, heavy, ugly, and mounted high... and for what benefit?
