Basically, I'm looking at adding another Leupold to the stable and I'm thinking a VX3i 3.5-10 will fit the bill. They're offered in 3.5-10x40 and 3.5-10x50. Can anyone give me a reason why one is preferable to the other?

Get the 40, can mount it lower and will provide all the light gathering and clarity needed to see well past legal shooting time. Probably my favourite all around scope.

The 40mm is all you will ever need. I would never consider the 50mm version... not even with a 4.5-14. 50mm = big, heavy, ugly, and mounted high... and for what benefit? No great light gathering abilities your eye could distinguish. Machines maybe.

Yeah 40mm has plenty of light gathering, and you can mount it lower.

If you don't mind a few ounces and double the price the 2-10 and 3-15 VX 5 HD are friggen awesome.

2-10x40 would be just about perfect for a hunting scope.

Leupold LPS 2.5 - 10x45mm Variable Power you see them for sale used on site, these LPS scopes have stunning glass, much better than the vx3 series scopes. same field of view as a Leupold 2 to 8x VX 3 at 100 y

Well, as an update I ended up with a Vari-XIII 3.5-10x40 with target turrets and a Viper PST 2.5-10. Good old EE, lol.
