I'm building a rifle on my newly aquired Stevens 200. I've narrowed the caliber down to 300 win mag, 338 win mag, 300 ultra or 338 ultra. Not really narrowed down . Will be used for longer range target shooting and maybe a moose in the fall. I can't decide whether or not to go 308 or 338 bullets. Which are better? 200-240gr 308 bullets or 250-300gr 338 bullets???

Is the ultra worth the extra powder for 200fps??

I should add, I'm planning to use a shilen drop in Savage replacement barrel, 26" long. Thanks for the input.

Some barrel makers will not make a RUM in a standard shank pipe. Better check your options.

The RUM has been fitted to a Savage but not to a Stevens. Needs a longer mag box and machining in the action to make fit. Don't have any specs but it will make a big jump in costs. Mag boxes should be available directly from Savage.

If you want to run from the mag, the 300WM will be your best choice. Stoked with 208gr Amax, you have ballistics to go to 1mile and beyond. For moose, just stuff a 180gr to 200gr of you liking and go hunt.

A small case 338 doesn't really do much and costs are way higher.

Consider a muzzle brake of good design as part of your project built items. Getting your teeth rattled will diminish your LR fun.

Bummer that the SIR deal is not open to the distant Cdn public.
