I've got a friendly competition coming up I'm trying to decide which rifle I should use. Need to narrow the list to down, as the shoot is only a few weeks away. (short notice)
I normally shoot off a bench, and would probably go with my swede m96, or m1917 30-06.
I'm leaning towards my k31 with gp11, but also strongly considering my swede m38, and no4 mk1.

What would you choose?

I've had the best luck using a K11 with the GP11. The thing is a fricken laser beam, with a little trigger time should have no problem ringing gongs at 300.

Yep, think I will go with my gut and stick with the k31. I would rather spend my time practicing, rather then working up a load.
I'm pretty good off the bench, but offhand I could use some practice.

Cheers

We shoot at Winona at 100, 200 and 300 yards. ORA Vintage Match. Prizes are vintage wines.

A fun match. 100 is shot standing. 200 and 300 shot prone, rested.

to answer your question. Young eyes = K31. Old eyes = #4.

I do really like shooting a peep sight. I find a peep sight really shines the farther out you go.
The m1917 is really accurate, but heavy, and I'm not setup to reload for it.

I think I will take out the no4 mk1 and k31 next week.

I'm getting second hand info about the shoot from a friend, and have my doubts that it will be even be offhand.
My hunting buddies think you need to shoot offhand to stamp your man card. I would rather take a rest and one good shot(with a bolt), over dumping out my lever, trying be a cowboy.

Cheers

Practicing offhand with a good 22 is very good training for all shooting.
Learn trigger control along with how to control breathing, heart pulse and shakes.

All good choices, but consider the cartridge first.
Who wouldn't want to shoot match grade ammo out of a milsurp? K11 all the way.

Shoot the rifle that fits you best and you can make out the sights on properly. If you use a rifle that doesn't fit you comfortably or that the sights are not sharp on target for your vision then it is a waste of time. I love my No4 but it is pretty hard to beat a long barreled Lee Metford or Mauser when it comes to older eyes acquiring the front sights and the target at the same time.

What is it about the #4 rifle that gives some help to us with our old eyes? I have only shot with Russian rifles and I am wondering if there are better iron sights.

We have a competition at out club called the "Mountain Range Match" which is 30 rounds prone, and 30 rounds kneeling at 300m. Lots of guys use K31s for this match and do quite well with them. I find it a challenging shoot.
