Thinking it's about time for a black rifle. The catch is, though I have my RPAL I would prefer a non restricted so I can take it out and shoot in the bush. Looking at something in .223 or 5.56. The Tavor is out as I just can't get on board with the way it looks. Seems like the XCR is pretty decent if not overly pricey. Also considering a Mini 14 in a Sparta stock. Did I miss any other obvious choices? Also, for this type of rifle what is my best bet for an optic for shooting between 100-300 yards?

Benelli MR1
T97
NR fs2000
AR 180b
M96 expeditionary
Etc....

The list goes on... Maybe try the search function.... Or google...

I had the same thoughts about the Tavor, but after having one and handling it, its a pretty neat fire arm, you get use to the different look, they sure are nice to shoot, balanced well, feels like you are holding a very light rifle, and NR to boot.

If you have the funds and don`t like the Tavor.....go with this....

ACR non-restricted version (you need barrel replaced)

You will enjoy!

I currently have the restricted version which is being modified to non-restricted by Herron Arms. Can`t wait to get it back!

:)

MR1 is accurate, reliable, still shoot occasionally my MR1 with 5K + rounds with only less than a handfull of malfunctions or a HK SL8 is probably the most accurate NR rifle out there... JP.

Thanks for the input. The more I look at it, the harder it is to swallow the price for a decent looking NR black rifle. Even the Mini 14 is now approaching the $1000 range.

MR1, T97, FS2000 - not a big fan
AR-180B and M96 - both look interesting but I don't believe either can be purchased new in Canada at least not from the quick search I did
ACR - ouch, that price tag...
HK SL8 - is it me or is that really heavy?

I may just have to suck it up and go restricted. I was eyeing up a DDM4 MK18 on Wolverines website. Or even one of those cheap DA556 end of the world combos from Canada Ammo.

The MR-1 is a tack driver and extremely well made, but can be finicky with magazine selection. XCR is just plain cool as is the Tavor. Problem is the cool guns are pricey.

when is keltec's .223 bullpup coming out? How about the IWI micro tavor (x-95 I think?). I'm sitting in the same boat, have been for awhile now. Will get the norc cqb for sure this spring, just because of the price. As far as "black" NR selection goes, there's nothing out there atm. Gonna sit on the sidelines for awhile.

ACR's the best...but it costs a lot

xcr, is.....but the NR tax, makes it about $1000.00 more than it should be.

Tavor's cool. It costs a lot, and there's a reason why the Tavor isn't everywhere. I haven't figured it out, exactly why (other than high cost) the Tavor isn't more popular. If it wasn't NR, you'd be saying "What's a Tavor?" I'd say "I don't know, who cares?"

Mini-14, heard too many bad things about them; they're the same as chevy trucks ie. you're just buying a low-quality product with a big name and a fat mark-up.

MR-1, I heard the barrel's were worse than the mini-14..next!

T-97, Almost called it good value, but then "good value" is an interesting concept. I'm not trading 2 days worth of hard labour, for what some Chinese sweat-shop kid, took 15 minutes to slap together

Only option really, is to help push to get AR's to NR. That's really all there is to it, eh?

I had a su 16 and a XCR . Both ran excellent . Sold both and now waiting on a stag arms. I'll get another XCR though, it,s an awesome gun.

First hand experience.. You sir have a lot.

I have used each of these... Except the x-95... But it is restricted regardless.

Mini-14. Proprietary mags
T97. If you like bullpups, sure
ACR $$$$$$
Fs2000 $$$$$$
Tavor. Good to go, but $$$ and you have to like it
MR1 feels like a shotgun. But very very well made.
Xcr - good idea poorly executed. And way more expensive than it should be.

You know what.. Every NR black gun is pretty expensive except for a SU16 which is very light.

My advice. Watch youtube videos on each, try them if you can, and buy what feels right.

All the black NR rifles are overpriced by 30% , so it is what it is. $800 gets you a su 16, goes bang every time, good trigger, very light,2 ish Moa , possibly better with reloads, lifetime warranty. If you like it , through a pistol grip and forend on for another $300. If not sell it for $700, your only out a hundred bucks.

I agree.

SU16 is an excellent place to start. You can upgrade it easily with parts direct from Kel Tec or sell it with minimal loss like Brian pointed out.

The thing weighs like 5ish pounds to, amazing.

^ And I sold Brian my Stag AR and bought his XCR-L haha

I did a lot of reading, and was between the ACR and XCR-L. The Tavor really wasn't in the running for me, as the bullpup configuration isn't right for myself, personal preference. It came down to the ACR and the XCR-L doing the same thing for me, and I actually saw some reviews where people preferred the XCR-L. Yes, the ACR is likely more accurate, but lets be honest, you're life doesn't depend on it for our purposes. To me, the extra cash wasn't worth the 1 moa difference - and i can't see many advantages beyond that, in my own opinion anyways.

Then there's the fact that, buying each used, l I was looking at 1000-1500 dollars more for the ACR (I see them on the EE, rarely, for 3000-3500. I understand if I were to do the conversion myself, maybe 2800-3000 by the time it's all said and done? (Just my estimates from what I've read here on CGN) Yes, the initial XCR-L's had some problems, but the newer versions seem to be doing quite well. If you were buying new, and paying 2700 and tax for an XCR-L, then yes, I'd probably consider reaching out for an ACR, if you're really set on it and don't trust the XCR-L. But considering you can find a keymod XCR-L on the EE for 2100 or less, I think the XCR-L is worth a second or third look. I don't have mine in my hands yet, but I don't believe I'll be disappointed. Plus, you can get a lot of great glass and a set of BUIS using the $1000 or more you sove.

But again, it's just one fellas opinion.

This isn't one of their ripoff ARs originally made for third world countries who the Americans wouldn't sell to, the T-97 is a variant of their own service rifle. The fit and finish on mine is flawless. It has a rugged AK/VZ hybrid action. It strips easily without tools into large, simple parts. The trigger is light and smooth. It is perfectly balanced at the pistol grip. I've found it to be a solidly built, accurate and reliable rifle.

The problem with the T97 is the lack of features. Bad (but not unworkable) magazine release, absolutely horrid safety position. No external controls for the bolt catch. No changing the muzzle device without taking it to a gunsmith. Want an optic? Hope you like chinwelds or taking a hacksaw to your iron sights. But then you're spending significant money on what's supposed to be a budget option.

Keltec SU-16, with pistol grip stock. $1000. Very light weight, and easy to carry in the woods.
