Building another tactical match/varmint/benchrest/long range do it all wonder gun. Current version is a 700 6mm rem which I have decided I don't like in a short action due to bullet seating restrictions. As stated earlier the gun will be the jack of all and master of none (same as the owner) so I have narrowed it to these fine options. The barrel will be a varmint contour 8 twist for 105+ pills. All of the leagues and shoots are semi casual/serious but I do like to win occasionally. Which one and why?

I was caught between 6br and 243 myself. I picked 243 only cause I wanted the extra umph so I had the option to hunt with it. Not that a 6br wouldn't kill a deer either. The 6br is more efficient and more accurate. Little or no recoil. 243 has a bit more recoil, not much. Tons of loading options and quality brass. Proven over and over. All 3 are good though.

At 1:35 in the morning I have some strange questions too, usually not about guns though.

The 6BR is the most inherently accurate of these 3. It is the cartridge to beat in 600M F-Class competitions and if you can read conditions, it is a deadly 1000M round. I also have a 6XC and I also have a 6-6.5X47 Lapua. I shoot the 6BR at 1 mile gongs and I use it for extreme long range gopher hunting as well.

The 6mmX47 Lapua is fantastic. The XC is also a good cartridge, but with a only a 1:8 twist, you will not be able to use the 6mm 115 DTAC and Bergers. Having said that, 105-108 bullets will fly out at 3100 fps + Their draw-back is barrel life. For a jack-of-all-trades rifle, these are good for less than 2000 rounds. The 243 is worse. The 6BR is the most accurate and has the best barrel life of all your choices.

FWIW, I have 6mm 1:8 Kriegers in heavy varmint contours

As an everything rifle, go 243. Likely you will use a shorter barrel for tactical events so muzzle velocity of the 6BR will be poor. 22" is not small case friendly.

Then you would likely want a mag fed rifle which again dictates a longer cartridge for best performance. The 6XC and Lapua will certainly feed from the mag but why not have a bit more case capacity.

I think the 243 is the best all around choice of your chamberings and you can run it hot or mild to duplicate the other ones.

For the type of rifle you will likely build, there is no accuracy advantage to any of your choices.

Actually Jerry, I have found the 6BR to be very efficient in the shorter barrels. Small charges of medium powder don't need too much barrel.
The only potential drawback to the 6BR is the feeding problems which can arise with the short, stubby case. That's where the 243 can help. Regards, Bill

Leeper, you are right but this was a one size fits all project.

So I lean towards solving all the upcoming issues and for me larger is better.

With the new center feed Savage mags, I expect to see more mag fed 6BR's. It does work, tried it in a 308 mag and it will feed. Just need to get the blocking right and away you go.

I have a 6br on a M700 repeater. I blocked the magazine and had a new follower milled. It feeds just fine with these mods.

Having owned a .243 win and the 6br I would pick the 6br, out to 600 yards the 6br was more consistently accurate. If I wanted a little more punch I would go with the 6 dasher.
