I will try for a 8x57 mm semi to complete my collection, and I decided to try to get something that used by the Egyptian army.

I'm not sure which is better overall, an Egyptian contract FN 49 or a Hakim rifle.

Which do you guys think is better?

I owned a Hakim ....fun to shoot and acurate ...noisy too. they dont like sporting ammo though, it wont feed right in them the bolt sticks open about a 16th of an inch because the shoulder of the bullet touchs the rifling, you need a sharp tapered military spitzer round to feed right in them.

yep there is ...I'd get that one if I were you, its in 8mm and the guy who owns it is a great fellow to deal with.

How can you complete your collection, if you only have one of the two?

In support of what tiriaq said, the FN was made by FN in Belgium and bought by Egypt. The Hakim was made in Egypt with tooling that was bought from Sweden. So, if you want something really Egyptian for your collection, get the Hakim, but if you want something to shoot, get the FN.

Hakim

I've had both and I really liked the Hakim just for its action - very cool. Of course I always had surplus to feed it with. Recoil was very mild due to the very efficient muzzle brake.

fn

get the fn because parts are available to keep it going hakim doesn't have all the parts available. I have the hakim .22's made by beretta and parts are not easy to find.

On a different level, what esthetics do you perfer? Numbers speak loudly and should be heard, but if your on the fence, maybe there is one you would perfer to see you wall every morning. (Ex.)

Are there any quirks I should know about in either rifle, such as what bullet grainage they can handle, and types of powder.

I've got an Ljungman :D (converted to .308)...:yingyang:..I hope the FN is "safer" to operate with clumsy thumbs....

Plus, there's the idea of violent brass ejection to consider...

The FN49 is somewhat prone to out-of-battery slamfires, especially with commercial ammunition. If you buy one (and I recommend you do - I have an Egyptian 8mm that is great to shoot) check first that it has a two-piece firing pin or replace the one-piece if that's how it's equipped. They're available out of the U.S.

Milsurp 8mm is getting a little thin on the ground as a scan of the threads here will show (it's corrosive at any rate) and if you reload, the recommendation is to go with harder "military" primers. CCI #34 if you can find 'em (largely unobtanium right now) or CCI #250 or #200.

Can't speak to the Hakim, though.
