For hunting deer in the REALLY thick stuff (shots no greater than 25 yards) what would you use? A rifle with open sights, a rifle with a scope, a shotgun with slugs or a shotgun with buckshot?:runaway:
 
I voted for a rifle with scope, because my rig with a scout scope is quick for close in work. If the target is obscurred by brush, it is easier to find holes to shoot through, and determine which part of the animal it is that you see using the scope.
 
either/or. It's hard to say that any one of the above is not going to work for your application. It really depends WHAT ELSE you do. If you're a bird hunter, then the shottie is a no-brainer, it's a very versatile gun.

Really, though, at 25 yards, anything would work equally well. Hell, go buy yourself a nice recurve bow.
 
Shotgun with slugs and a red dot on top.
Marlin lever or Rem pump again with a red dot.
Winchester lever with a peep.

You cant go wrong with any of these.

Any one would do fine, but I voted for a scoped rifle. Easier to pick out those pesky branches and choose the exact spot for the shot placement. This assumes you are stand hunting. If I was driving deer it would be a shottie with buckshot.
 
marlin 1894 in 44mag with open sights comes to mind. <25yrds? scopes are useless, you could place bullets well sighting down a plain barrel at those ranges. buckshot, equally as useless, inside 25yrds if you can hit it with buckshot you can place a slug behind the shoulder.
 
I like these polls...keep em coming. It brings out the armchair expert in me. I put shotgun w/ buck because around here its all shotgun or blackpowder for deer and because you said it was very thick brush.
 
Damn it all.... I have to agree with Amphibious. Lever with irons is deadly on deer in thick cover!
I had to vote shotgun and slugs tho, cuz thats our game down here in the Cavan Swamp!
Open sights are good in the thick stuff... Holo sites and reddots are good if you have the knack for them, very fast.

To the 6% who said buckshot... GET A CLUE... BUCKSHOT IS FOR VARMINTS!

Why is buckshot called buckshot if you can't shoot bucks with it:p

Anything SHORT is the key at those ranges. I'd refer a handgun or a really short rifle. A 18" barreled shotgun woudln't be out of place, eiher (with slugs)

It's amazing how fast you can hit small targets at close range with a low powered scope- if you practice.

I knwo for a fact that I can nail beer cans at 25-50 yards with a scoped 22 far faster than one with open sights. Also paper plates with hutng rifles at those ranges.

Keep both eyes open, splash the crosshairs on the plate/can and squeeze.

Try it some time, it may surprise you.
