I have an option to buy anyone of the following pellet guns. I would prefer a .22, but if one of these in .177 are better all around I would take it based on a good recommendation. All are available in .177, but not in .22 at my retailer.

They are:

Ruger Air Magnum by Umarex .22
Ruger Air Hawk Elite by Umarex .177
Gamo Big Cat .22
Gamo Hunter Supersport .22
Benjamin Trail NP XL Magnum .22 Nitro Piston

Is the Nitro Piston any good, reliable, long lasting? I've heard of complaints against Benjamin lately.

I want to use it for target and vermin control.

I have the Air Hawk, but not the Elite, which is just a different stock. Not bad, but a little rough. It's not available anywhere in .22. The gun it's a copy of, the Diana 34, is a well made and well regarded springer and is available .177 and .22. Hard to go wrong with one of those: http://www.specialtyshootingsportso...34-22cal-break-barrel-air-rifle/prod_104.html.

It's also available with a synthetic stock: http://www.specialtyshootingsportso...r-22-cal-break-barrel-air-rifle/prod_107.html

And buying from this online retailer, you get an inspected and tested rifle. They are also highly regarded.

I believe the rated life of the current generation of Nitro Piston mechanisms is about the same as the rated life of the spring in a springer, which is about 15 years. What this works out to in practice is anyone's guess (for both). I understand that the XL series give up some of the advantages of nitro pistons: they're not that quiet or easy to c0ck (compared to springers).

I ended up buying 2 .22 rifles from a CGNer, one Weihrauch HW30 and one Crosman RM422 made by Mendoza. Both look like they were not used very much. I found a bad scanned copy of the HW30 manual off a Dutch airgun forum, but I cannot find one for the RM422, even if I search under Crosman or Mendoza. Both guns have writing on the receiver saying the manuals are on line, dough!

Still gonna find a high velocity .177, but not the Ruger Air Hawk Elite as I heard from the seller he had 3 that were all junk. Might have to forget Le Baron and get something from D&L, which by the way have "Winchester" M1A semi's in .177 if anyone likes that stuff!

I had a Benjamin nitro piston XL in .25 and it packed a serious wallop for vermin, not too loud also and comes with an alright scope considering the price of the package......accuracy was decent inside of 50 yards. I have since gone to a condor in .25, accurate out to 100 yards or better if you know the pellet trajectory.....but the cost is up there with accessories and you are dealing with PCP issues(charging the tank). Nitro piston XL in .22 cal will give you some good power and distance to dispatch pests.

I just bought the Benjamin trail np .22 from Wal-mart in the U.S. for $198.00 border crossing was no problem with my pal in hand. 950 fps. very quiet, no complains yet only about 50 shots through it though.
