Which one would you pick for a varmint rifle...

All three are good yote calibres. If you don't reload, I'd go with 243 Win or 223 Rem because ammo is more available in stores. If you do reload, go with 22-250.

If your plan is to do gophers, coyotes, deer, elk, moose, etc I'd go with a 308

If you're just going to do coyotes, and maybe some gophers I'd get a 223.

243 costs just as much as 308, and 22-250 isn't as available (where I live) as 223.

Even if you reload I'd go with 223, the stuff costs under $.30 / shot to handload.

What type of gun are you thinking?

if you arent shooting coyotes past 450yards the .223 will serve you best. cheapest to shoot and doesnt damage pelts as bad. I personally have always used a .243 because I dont keep the pelts and like the long range performance. so I guess it depends on what you want out of the rifle. cant go wrong with any of the three really. .22-.250 is smack in the middle of the two.

I would buy all three + add another.

For Yotes this is my pick
1st .22-250 ..........Tikka M55
2nd .204 Ruger ......... Rem LVSF
3rd .223 ......... Ruger Mini 14 Target
4th .243 ......... Sako Forester Deluxe

Ya ! I know. #4 is the rifle i like the most, "But"
I have them all and they are all great Calabers. You really can't go wronge with any of them.

Good luck!

The 58 gr V-max in 243 really outshine all the rest on coyotes it even put my 220 Swift to retierment i push those little grenade a tad over 3900 fps and they are super accurate, i am telling you guys my 223 and my 22-250 and my 220 Swift are seeing alot of the safe since a couple of years, the v-max 58gr is in a league by itself, there is something magical almost 60 gr to almost 4000 fps...zip...zap... Batman... Jp.

Haha ok I'm with you, buy all 3 and then add something else into the mix.

Best post I've seen all day!

If you had the choice between a 22-250 a 243 or 223 which one would you use on coyotes... JP.

DANG IT!!....could I have a llook at the pictures....it might help me choose them a little quicker :D I'd use them ALL on Coyotes...seeins how I hate the bast**ds ...223 and 243 ammo are more popular here in the East
....Don't think there's a shortage of any of it out West.

I got 2 of the three you posted about...Stainless Tikka T3 Varmint... 8 twist....A Stevens 200...243 that I restocked and bedded....I'd dearly Love to have that other one....just cuzzz .....I want one:D

If I was in the market for a varmint rifle today, I'd probably look at building a rifle chambered for the 6mm wildcat that David Tubb has named the 6 XC, which essentially is seating a 6mm bullet in a .22-250 case. The advantages of this cartridge according to 6mmBR.com are:

A)The cartridge case body length is 0.023" shorter than the 6mmX. This means that a 6XC chamber reamer now cuts the base of the case closer to the original .22-.250 base diameter.

B) Shortening the case body also allows for less longitudinal (length) stretching during fire-forming. This will result in the 6mmXC having a greater case life (more firings).

C) The 6XC's 30-degree case shoulder retards case growth (less trimming required).

D) I have found that velocities attainable with the 6XC are equivalent to those attainable using .243 Winchester. Barrel life is much better than .243 Winchester due to the fact that the 6XC has about 7 grains less powder capacity.

For price, availability & practicality, I prefer .223. My Yote gun is a Tikka T3 Lite. This is perfect up to 250 m.

If price & noise are no object, 22-250 is mint

After complition of my LR rig ( Icon P.H. 6.5 Creedmoor & Deon March 60X52BR ) i intend to devellop a varmint load to shoot them at 6 or 7 hundreds metres... We see them up to a 1000 metres maybe i could get them that far after i master ( that is a big word let say practice ) the art of LR, on Hodgdon site it show it can push a 95 gr V-max at 3319 fps that ought to be a real LR yotes destructor in a LR rifle... JP.

The 243 is very hard on pelts, I've shot a bunch of coyotes with it and it tears 'em up. I much prefer the 220 Swift with 40 gr., no exit wounds. I suppose the 22-250 would be similar in performance, as would the 204 Ruger. The 223 is too slow. :D

Just another calaber to think about.
I have all 4 but don't think anyone will go out and buy all these to campare.
Do you think that any yote can tell the difference between any of these?
I don't think so. They all do the job very well.
