I know this will go off the rails but here goes. :p

If I were to buy 1 pellet rifle for myself, what would you recommend.

Needs to be accurate. For irons prefer a peep sight. Can mount a scope (which scope?)
Prefer a rifle that is not considered a firearm.
Moderate cost. (Last I checked, I didnt make the international air rifle team!).

Havent decided between 22 and 177. Thinking of going the 177 route.
Can be single shot. Not sure I want to go the CO2 route.

In addition to a nice good accurate rifle that others here can recommend better I also suggest you look at princess auto for a second beater gun

They have a $50 .177 that is far better than its sticker price!

What is budget for rifle? For scope?
Accurate at what range, 10yd or 50yd?
What is the intended use? Punching paper or shooting critters?
CO2 will give you issues with colder temperature. Spring guns have self contained air source. PCP requires an air supply i.e. tank or pump.
Air rifles are like any other rifle. Cost increases with quality.

He does not want a pal rated rifle so give serious consideration as to what your purpose is if you are thinking furry critters. If for plinking and target shooting, then I would go .177.

A sub 495fps break barrel .25 cal would be fine for paper punching and squirrels.
I know I'm commenting on old posts. I just recently joined the forum.

Daisy 953 Target Pro are great rifles, if you can find them ( mine was under 150$ )They have fiber optic sights, can get peeps for it, and or mount a scope. They're a single pump, you can shoot it, single shot or from a 5 round self indexing clip. They're plenty accurate. At 20 M it outshot my Benjamin Summit Ranger. Down side the stock if you don't have the spacers can be little short, I made my own spacer for mine from a 2x4.

Now they make it in a Cadet model, with the more accurate LW barrel, spacers, the globe and diopter sights. Down side, they're over 300$

The 953 cadet is just a daisy powerline. It doesn't have a Lothar Walther barrel. The 753 has the Lothar Walther barrel hence the price difference between the 953 and 753. The difference in price between the 953 and 953 cadet is the different sights and barrel weight.

Prefer a rifle that is not considered a firearm.

Doubtless you already know - but worth reminding the forum. Sub 500lbs does not make it "not considered a firearm" for almost all purposes other than do you need a PAL to buy one.

Shoot across/near to a road, shoot in a by law prohibited area, shoot the neighbor's dog to keep it off the lawn (dont do this anyhow!) all of these and more you will be charges with a "firearms" related crime.
