Which RDS should I buy, and how should I mount it?

Just bought my first AR and I'm going to mount a rds. Leaning more towards the Vortex Strikefire II but it's a toss up between that and the SPARC II. Anyways, I understand cantilever mounts are all about achieving eye relief but on the Strikefire or any rds without an etched reticle the eye relief is unlimited, so what's the advantage of the cantilever mount vs a standard single ring? Also, what's the difference between low/mid/high mounts on an AR? Cowitness?

Feel free to toss in your Strikefire II vs SPARC II debate points, I'm listening!

Sorry if this should be in the optics forum. Figured since I'm gearing these questions to the AR platform I'd post it here

I prefer the SPARC II or SPARC AR over the Strikefire. I just find them easier to pick up. The SPARC AR is nice as it uses a common AAA battery instead of a button battery.

The Aimpoint PRO Farmboy has suggested is an excellent optic for not a lot more money. That said, you can get an EoTech 512 for that price and I still far prefer them despite the negative press. Mine have held zero and for me, the Donut of Death reticle wins hands down for speed and accuracy.

I run folding BUIS on all my rifles and prefer absolute cowitness. I can always use the BUIS to confirm zero if my RDS gets bumped or comes loose.

Have fun!

The Aimpoint PRO is a great optic that will last you forever.

I've been using the Mepro M5 RDS for nearly a year now and it's been excellent also. It doesn't have Aimpoint battery life, but 7 months constant on with a AA is still better than most options.

I say save a little more and get an eotech exps2. It comes with a qd mount that is lacking on most others. The aimpoint pro is also a solid choice but the qrp2 mount is lacking

Having once owned a strike fire, I strongly recommend saving your pennies a little bit longer and finding a good deal on an aimpoint on the EE.

Like everyone has said...save your pennies and get an Aimpoint PRO or save them a little longer and get the MRO.
Buy once, cry once.
If you get the vortex you may enjoy it...but you'll always dream about the Aimpoint/Trijicon

Aimpoint well worth the money & lots of deals on the secondary market, Trijicon MRO gives you a great option & as quoted before buy once cry once !!

Hmm.. I see a trend here! I'll consider my options while I keep an eye open on the EE. New Aimpoints are definitely beyond my budget at the moment, but I may be able to swing a used one! Can anyone shed some light on the cantilever vs standard rings for a red dot?

Aimpoint T1 or T2 if you want a small sight.

Aim point M4 for long battery life on easily obtainable AA batteries.i
