which rifle do I hunt with this year?

A long time hunter friend said take your .30-06 because you do not want to have to chase or wound your first animal. I was thinking .243 or .270 This is my very first hunt ever. I know there is never a guarantee of a buck so I thought .243 would suffice for Vancouver Island deer. Your thoughts.

Simple. Take whatever you can shoot effectively. A .243 in the lungs will beat a .416 in the ass every time.

I probably would take this statement as an indication that this "hunter Friend" has no usefull advice to offer.

Both dropping the deer quickly and preserving the meat for the table both depend on shot placement and not which of those calibres you choose. Anything other than a well placed shot and you can have half the meat ruined or a deer that runs off somewhere unfound to die.

blacktail ain't big. A 243 is plenty - put it in the right place and it's game over.

A 243 is fine for blacktail, but if you are planning on bigger stuff liek moose in the future, you may want to look at the 270 and up.
