If am to buy a new rifle (savage package series) which would be the best all around, .30-06, 7mm or .300. I already have a .270 but want a lighter gun with a detachable mag.

Of the 3, if you mean 'all around' as in most versatile, the 30-06 is it. No question.

Do you handload or buy factory ammo?

I'd go with the 300 Winchester Magnum. This is because I have found in the past that on game performance with the .270 WCF and the 30-06 Springfield is so similar, I can not tell the difference (neither can most). Deer, Elk and Moose cannot tell the difference between a 130gr in .277 or a 150gr in .308 at 3000fps, or a 150gr .277 and a 180gr .308 at 2800fps. But the .300 Winchester Magnum with a 200gr at 2900fps does penetrate a hell of a lot farther, apples to apples, than either of the previous and makes a difference on what shot angles are reasonable with the bigger game. Deer still can't tell the difference;).

If I was to upgrade I'd move to the 300 WM, but recoil is always a factor for some people. I'd buy something prettier than a Savage though:D.

I too was thinking the .300, and no I don't hand load. Just picked up the 243 savage package for a buddy and I think it's pretty nice for under 500. I am going to shoot a 300 rum of my freinds to checkout recoil, but I'm not target shooting so I think I'll be alright. After all I can put 20-30 down my .270 at the range in a tee-shirt with out flinching.

Thanks.

+1

Yeah, if you already have a .270 then go for the .300 Win Mag.

If you didn't & just wanted one all round rifle then I'd say get the .30-06..

300WM is all around. You can purchase a wide variety of cartridges for it for most any purpose. I have one of the Savage package guns and I think its a good gun. Trigger is a little heavy, and the foreend of the gun is flexible, so watch where you rest it while shooting off a bench.

I've got a Savage .300wm and I love it........nothing wrong with a Savage either.....good reliable gun......a good looking gun is a gun that shoots well and reliable and built in the U.S.A...........but I'm no expert.....

Hey Gringo.... are you sure you didn't want to log on at truck_hunters.com?
By the way you asked that question , I thought you must be the a**hole that is the local expert in window-mount adjustments.

So called experts? I wonder you got an answer at all. It must be a nice weekend and poeple feel obligated to be nice to an inconsiderate noob. :jerkit:
