which rings???

I have tried almost every make of rings over the years and have found that Leupold rings work the best for me.

If I do have a problem with them almost every local store has replacement rings in stock.

I use these rings on standard calibers as well as on my 300 & 375 RUM's & my Marlin 1895GS 45-70 all of which are very heavy recoiling guns with the top velocity loads that I shoot.

You can put Burris Z rings on weaver bases. I know for sure. I'm no longer a fan of the Z rings but i still like the Burris Signature's. Leupold dual dove tail i like too but what I'm really becoming a fan of is Talley. They have lots of models too.

Lap your rings like saka suggested. Works like a charm.

I had a set of Burris Sig Zee rings on weaver bases and the set up was great. The polymer inserts really protect your scope from scratches and holds that scope in there nicely.
How does one lap your rings?? Does this need to be done by a gunsmith??

Cheers!!

Gunsmith or buy/borrow a lapping kit. The kit contains a piece of round stock with two handles and a lapping compound. You run the tool back and forth in the bottom of your your mounted rings without the tops installed until there are no more high points. It allows your rings to grip the scope evenly and not distort your scope. Some one correct me it I missed anything.

Nothing to correct but I'll add something.

If you use a ring system that turns the rings into your mounts, the lapping tool aligns them true.

rings

I have bought 4 sets of Talley lightweights and use them on a 25-06, 270WSM 7mm rem mag. and a 338WM, they are one piece ring and base simple to install and weigh only 2.1 oz. I paid $62.50 can. to my door from talley. Rick Bin off of 24hour campfire is the rep. to go through. Worth checking into i love them.

its a savage 116FSS in 300 RUM with millet rings and bushnell trophy but its getting changed to an elite
Definately lose the Millets............I had a set that would let the tube move under recoil on my 300 mag, didn't matter what I tried :x
They are probably great for "light" recoiling rifles but I don't like them...plenty of better rings out there
I'll second the Talley one piece Lightweights, I just put a set on my 308, They are Light, strong, and cheap

Weaver rings are very common, inexpensive and allow scope to be easily removed and installed. They are not sleek or showy but are completely satisfactory as far as I'm concerned.

Aw what the hell....
Milletts are good, you could try tightening them down more, or running a bead of Loctite (thin bead) inside the ring as well during assembly. Or you can put a small strip of hockey tape inside the ring. Under compression the tape will act like rosin. Some people use rosin, but I found the tape better.

Burris are OK, Weavers are CRAP. Sorry, I keep telling people that, but they are. Do not use the cheap weavers (thin steel upper saddle) :!: . The two nibs on the upper ring halves will rotate the scope if you tighten it too much, and will also dent the tube if you tighten them down to much.
The Weaver grand slams are ok, but use that same curseful uppersaddle design that likes to rotate the scope under tightening. No nibs though.

Warne, thier rings are good, and thier split rings, while a massive PITA to get on at times, are gentle and usually pretty good on a scope.

Leupold.... Well I like thier PRWs, but don't care as much for thier orther designs, though they have a set for Weaver style mounts. Look into them, most Leupold suppliers, even if they don't have them, can get them. I had some problems with some of the early PRWs, but they seemed to have worked the kinks out.

After that your looking at big time stuff, that most hunters have never considered, like Badger, KAC, Smith, T&B etc, and thier prices reflect thier quality.

TALLEY DUAL SCREW QD RINGS. PERIOD.

Best rings I've ever put on a hunting rifle. :)

Also, EAW QDs are nice. The Claws are best, but who wants to pay $1000 for mounts, rings, and fitting?

Con-trol seamless, projectionless mounts for good looks and strength (and they treat your scope tube nice as well). Warne rings for when the scope has to come off with any regularity.

The Cone-trols are a work of art... I assume they're still made, it was kind of a one man operation... but I have spares, just in case...
