This is getting bad, I'm torn between 4 scopes that I'll put on my 30-06. I have a budget of $500 (maybe $600). It will be used in cutblocks, prarries, and target. Mostly around 200yd shots going out to 400 yds in target.
The choices:

1. Bushnell Elite 4200-2.5-10x50
2. Leupold VX-I 4-12x40
3. Weaver grand slam 4.5-14x40
4. Burris Full field II 3-9x50 (with BP)

I have looked through all and they all have good quailities. Just can't make up my mind! HELP (and $600 IS the limit)

I have both a Leupold VX1 and VXII scope and I think that VXII scope is quite a bit nicer. The VXIIs have better lens coatings and it seems noticeably brighter in low light than the VXI. My VXII is 3X9 and it seems to offer a good compromise for where I hunt in the mountains and the prairies, so maybe add another scope to your list to look at. Mine was $495 at Russell's if my memory is correct. You'll likely find service is superior with Leupold than the other brands you listed in the unlikely event something goes wrong with your scope.

You could make your way alot farther up the Leupold food chain and still stay in your budget. A VX11 3-9 x 40 is only $410 at WSS for instance. If you are willing to go up to $600 you could abandon all your choices and kick it up a notch or two.

You won't go wrong with the Leupold VariX II 3-9x40. It'll work fine for any shot inside 400 yards. If you need more than 9 power for hunting big game, then perhaps it's time to take up golf...;)

I would choose the 4200 out of your list. All of my big game rifles wear VX III 2.5-8 X 36's, except for my 300 Ultramag...it wears the 4200 2.5-10X40. I bought the scope for the RUM a couple years back, and for the $ it cost I really can't complain at all. It is better than the VX 1's and even with the VX II's. If I were you I would buy either/or used off the EE. The warranty is transferable, and the bucks you save can be better put towards mounts/loading gear.

I prefer Leupold. Dont look at the VX1-you cant compare that scope to the others you listed. Go either VX2 (3-9x40 or 4-12x40 with LR duplex) or even better VX3 (3.5-10x40 or 4.5-14x40 BC reticles) . I have the BC reticles on my 2 270WSM's, a new gunmetal grey waiting for a rifle, and a 4-12x40LR on my 243. My 300WM has the older Vari-X III 3.5-10x40 since 1997/98 with no problems either-neverlost its zero until I changed to handloading in 2004/05

Plus the warranty depot is located in Alberta so if you have problems or repairs to do, its quick, not like Bushnell down into the USA.

For the $500-600 price range the VX2 is the way to go unless you find a VX3 for a good price.

You know, its really a toss up between leopold and burris! I would like the extra power of the leopold, but that ballistic plex looks interesting.
