Santa was nice enough to bring me my first shotgun for Christmas - a Mossberg 500. That's the one that comes with 3 barrels, one of them being rifled for deer hunting. With 51 pages of info here I was wondering if someone could just give me an idea of what would be a reasonably priced scope to put on it? I'd like to get a few ideas before heading to the store so I have an idea of the issues in selecting one and what to look for.
Many thanks :shotgun:

I have the same shotgun, buy a bushnell trophy with extended eye relief the mag on it is adjustable 3-6. $99.

Ps don't remove the shell blocking rod, the rod that limits you to03 shells, trust me not worth it, I did and now have feeding problems.

A low powered scope is what you want for hunting. A fixed 2 1/2 power would be about right. Or a 3X.

A rifle scope would have the paralex set for arountd 150 yards. A shotgun scope for about 50 yards. Probably would not be a noticable difference.

The internals of a zoom scope look more like a watch or clock - so many moving parts. If buying a cheap scope, best bet is a fixed power.

Zero it in and it never gets touched again.

I am assuming the scope is mounted on top of the receiver, like on a rifle.

On my Mossy 500 i mounted a red dot sight. I expect deer at 15 to 40 yards.

If the scope is mounted forward, on the barrel, then you need a long eye releif scope.

Decision

Thanks guys for all your input. In the end I tried the Bushnell Trophy but it was $189 ( nice but a bit more than I wanted to spend) so I went with the Bushnell Banner Dusk & Dawn 3-9 x 40 mm. I'll keep it on lowest zoom and hope I get close enough.

Happy hunting.
