Hi all,

This may need to go to the optics section.

I just received a Remington 700 in .270 Win (RH, LA) with a wood stock and blued barrel from an awesome family member. He hasn't used it in the last five years, and the rifle itself has only fired approximately 10 rounds, I gave it a good cleaning and it's practically good as new. I'm planning on hunting deer and perhaps moose with this rifle next fall.

During my pre-Christmas shopping, I stumbled upon a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x50mm scope (which has the "Golden Ring" warranty) for a pretty solid price, so I picked it up. However, this being my first scope purchase, I don't know much about mounting systems, bases or rings.

From my limited research, I chose the Leupold Quick Release Mounting System because of the ability to easily remove the scope when the time comes to clean the rifle. I'd go with the:
50050 2-piece QR Base, and
49979 1" HIGH Ring.

1. Thoughts on the Leupold Quick Release Mounting System?
2. Are there any other (better/cheaper/simpler/different) choices for the base/rings I should be considering?
3. Any online retailers you suggest? I've been looking at OpticsPlanet.com, shipping is a bit steep, but they're on special so I'd order the QR rings and 2-piece base for a grand total of ~103$ USD...

Thanks for your time!

A weaver type Burris base and a set of Burris signature rings are economical and will work just fine. My 700's have one piece talley lw on them, pretty much screw em on and drop the scope into them.

Both these are excellent choices. Prices are reasonable and both reliable.

x2…

…why would you want to remove the scope for cleaning? All my scopes stay on my rifles and I'm able to clean around them just fine. A lot of guys don't even like to remove the action/barrel from the stock for cleaning during hunting season, let alone remove their scope.

The QR system is great where you find it necessary to remove your scope after every use, for whatever reason.
When I saw how quickly one can be removed it appeared to be an invitation to theft if left unattended.
I have one QRW system reserved for a 36X BR scope used for testing various hand loads or rifles.
Since the rifle was gifted, you may wish to consider using a higher quality scope from within the Leupold line as the Rifleman series is their entry level scope.
Hunting season is a ways off so you have ample time to research what is available and suits your needs.

Well,i've had a few different set ups on my 700 over the years and i have settled on the Talley lightweights. Highly recommend them. In fact, i just switched a couple of my rifles from weaver bases and detachables to talleys this past weekend. They are awesome. You don't need to remove your optics to clean your gun imo.

This! QDs sound like a lot of extra expense for no real benefit in your case.

the most you have to spend as you will upgrade as time moves on in the end you will save money and change guns and keep the scope

Other than being more aesthetically pleasing than the Weaver style R&B, the Talleys really don't offer anything more. I use them both.
