Hi
I am new to all this long range shooting :sniper: stuff and I need some advice.
I want to buy a NightForce scope. I was/am looking at a NXS 8-32x56 with the NP-R1 reticle. For some reason I am thinking I should go with the NXS 5.5-22X56 also with the NP-R1 reticle. I found out today that I cant get the NP-R1 reticle that I actually wanted (the one for the 3.5-15X scopes)

I am also looking at the mill dot reticle with mil-rad turrets (my math is not all that good) :D

Which might be a better choice/combo?

I want to shoot .50cal rifles in the future and would also like to try long range shooting (800 yards+).

Right now I have a Remington 700P .308WIN and a Near mfg base with a 20MOA taper.

Any help will be appreciated.

Good choice. Money spent on glass is never wasted.

I have the 5.5 -22 x 56 with MLR reticle on my custom R700 in .308 and I absolutely love it.

I totally agree with getting good glass. I would also urge getting as much magnification as you can afford.

As for reticles, I'm a target dot/laser range finder kinda guy. The less schitt in my scope the better

I personally like the NP-R1 reticle. It's easy to range with and it's accurate. It's so accurate that I see no need for a range finder. Also, everything at the specific ranging power for your scope is in 1 MOA increments on elevation and 2 MOA on windage...really simple. Some people may say that it's busy when compared to the NP-R2 or MD. If you're trying to range something that is very close(say less than 200 yards) than yes, it is busy. However, how often are you going to be doing that? All your ranging starts at distances that are hard to guess at...300, 400+ yards away. If you're not concerned with using the reticle for range estimation or hold points on windage then I'd go with a simpler reticle like the NP-1 or CH's.

MOA not mil rad.
Get all the Magnification you can afford. If your gonna put this on a 50 eventually then yes get the NXS.
I find my BR to be alot clearer than my NXS.
I have two N/F both at 42 X and love em both.
