Which scope, rail & rings for the Tavor? Is it possible to co-witness with the BUIS?

Hey Guys;

I am thinking of replacing the Mepro21 (1 moa dot) on my Tavor... A couple things...

My Tavor will be used for hunting groundhogs, coyotes etc., and at the range. So I'm considering a scope with a traditional cross-hair reticle.

Does anyone know if any scope, rail & rings will co-witness with the existing BUIS? Keeping in mind that I'm NOT going to "remove" the rear BUIS as some others have...

If its not possible to co-witness, then maybe the rings could be quick release, possibly ARMS???

Do you guys think the eye relief of the scope will be a problem?

What set-up are the Israeli's using on their sniper version of the rifle???

Cheers & Thanks
Jay

I made my rail high enough to clear the the rear sight by 2mm useing a LaRue 1.5 spr mount with a S&B short dot you can use an AMD mount and get the same result. If you go with the dalask mount it is 4mm shorter so you will need a taller mount or use a riser.

Jay - I don't think you'll be able to co-witness with a magnified optic...picking up the front and rear back up sight through a scope isn't going to happen...I used an ACOG on my first Tavor and it worked very well... If you use a quick detach system like an ARMS or similar, you can ditch the glass and go onto the iron - er I mean plastic sights...

I now have eotech's on both Tavors and they co-witness well...

Cheers

Mike

Pretty much the only way you'll be able to co-witness with a magnified optic is if you get an eotech with a flip-to-side magnifier.

I assume with the EOTech magnifier there is no bullet drop compensator correct? Unless you by the specific 557 model with the three reticles?

Or does the magnifier have something in it to handle this?

Thanks
Tim

Nope

Don't know how well that would work with the magnifier.

Nope.

You might be able to co-witness with an Elcan SpecterDR in 1x mode but you won't be able to in 4x mode. The Elcan (as well as a lot of low magnification mil-type scopes) has BUIS of it's own on top of it though.

Yes, the magnification will cause the front sight to disappear from view..

Yes even on 1.1x I can not see my front sight,I went on the premise that the OP wanted the center of the optic to be the same hight as the irons.

Thanks for the replies guys. I guess I confused the question... What scope, rail & rings can I use so that I don't have to remove the rear BUIS???

I hear ya on the co-witness NOT working with a scope & it's magnification.

From the other threads I've seen on the topic people seem happy with the Eotech/FTS magnifier as a CQB/medium range solution that keeps the functionality of the BUIS.

Otherwise there's people happy with ACOGs, Aimpoints and Elcan SpecterDR sights, depending on their budget and requirements. You don't have to take off the BUIS with those but you can't use it either.

It's kinda hard to recommend something not knowing your budget and what range (100m, 200m, 800m?) you'll use it at, etc.

Usually groundhogs and yotes are hunted at fairly close range so I'd recommend an Eotech to start, which gives you the option to add a magnifiying scope later if you find you need it. As far as rails go, they're all fairly similar. I have Dlask's rail and I'm happy with it.

Okay, let's say I go with a Trijicon Acog... There are ALOT of choices... What magnification (I lean towards the 4x), what reticle, who to get it from... Help me narrow it down.

When it comes to the rail... Which one? Keeping in mind I don't want to remove the rear BUIS. Also, is eye relief going to be an issue with an Acog?

Maybe a ARMS quick release setup is an option to quickly get back to the BUIS...

Thanks in Advance Guys!

Cheers

P.S. Furet's setup is HOT! Maybe this is the way I should go??? I have a couple questions about it... Magnification, reticle, eye relief, which rail, which rings etc etc etc... Cost???

The Scope is a Trijicon TR24G (1-4x).
The rail is the new factory rail.

The show and tell picture is an ARMS #35 with medium insert (ie making it a high scope ~1.5")( the pic is mssing the rear top ring...), the rail is too short to use standard rings and the front ring needs to overhang the rail (see above pic).
I do not like this mount because it is made of seperate pieces and is hard to align the rings however the nice thing is that you can adjust the spacing between the rings and use different spacers for adjusting height, I ordered an ADM AD-recon 30mm mount to replace it.

Height wise the factory rail is about 1/4" lower than an AR15 flat-top (AR15 rail is about 1/2" above stock, the Tavor is about 1/4" above stock), but it is very acceptable for height and using a 1.5" height type mount.

Eye relief, in all cases the scope will need to be removed in order to use the rear BUIS.

Scope was ~1,200$ last year from Wolverine, but a dealer here had advertised it for <1,000$ before Christmas.
ADM mount is ~235$ http://www.armseast.com/store/index.php?p=product&id=65&parent=33

I just bought a magnifier for my eotech. Will try it at the range on the tavor tomorrow. It's a pretty sweet setup though. Speckfire's pics made me do it!

When I had the ACOG on, the rail I used was a little higher.
You'd probably be ok with the 999 rail and standard mount.
If you want to take a look through my rifles to see what you
Like, let me know through PM. I also have a spare rail if you
Wanted to try it for height.

WOW, thanks for the offer! I'm still in the midst of considering ALL options, I'll be in touch.
