Just looking for a fun, reliable, accurate (out to 50yards) and decent open sights. No interest in modifications just looking for a good gopher gun / can roller. I have owned alot of bolt .22's but never a semi. Out of these models what will best suit my needs?

Marlin Model 795
Savage Model 64
Remington Model 597 (hear horrible things about the old ones but hear good things about the new ones)
Ruger 10/22

Thanks

10/22 all the way, count on spending a very little bit of money for simple mods included the auto-bolt release, extended mag release, bolt buffer and VQ extractor. Plus a different trigger if you so choose.

He asked for something rimfire not centre fire. The SKS is a piece of sh*t. Why anyone would buy one when a VZ/CZ is available and far superior is beyond me.

The 10/22 is the proverbial "22lr semi" of the free world. Lots of mods, mags, and parts available. The auto bolt release is a useless option as the rifle does not have a last round hold open device. Extended mag release and perhaps an extended charge handle are nice. The factory stocks are useable but better options exist.

I really like my 597. nedded a small mod to get it perfect, but nothing major. Not too expensive, its accurate and reliable for me. I liked the feel of the 597 over my 10/22.

Sir, I take offence! (insert glove to face here) I own several sks, cz858 and 10/22, and they all have a place in my heart. It is what it is. But on topic, 10/22 all the way, lots of bits you can add, reasonable price, and you can blend in at the range!

Your offence is noted, and I still don't care. SKS rifles are crap and offer no advantage over a CZ.

10/22 again.

Mine has shot well from new, and is bone stock, except for the stud on the forend to mount a Harris Bipod.

The availability of the few parts that may ever give grief is pretty much assured, given it's status as hot-roddable, moddable and customizable.

Aftermarket stuff is almost everywhere. the factory mags work well and there is a decent selection of choices in the aftermarket mag arena.

Anything you don't like can be changed, if you gotta, but so far, I haven't gotta!

Cheers

Out of these... the 10/22

If you want to know what's my favorite can-roller, the Browning Auto-22

If you look around, Japanese version can be had for not much more money then a new 10/22...
