I am wanting to buy a fun mil-surp semi auto. Just haveign a tough time narrowing it down. Had thoughts on an SVT-40, AG42b or an FN-49. Also had thoughts on a Norinco M-14. Aside from the Norinco which of these is easiest to find and what do the prices run? leaning towards the FN but dont seem to see any out there.

FN-49's come up regularly in the EE. Lately they seem to be in the $450-600 range.

SVT's seem to be in the $500-600 range. Stock M305's are cheaper and AG42B's probably the least expensive.

If you're looking for a cheap(ish) plinker, I'd go with the SVT. 7.62x54R is probably the cheapest milsurp full power cartridge available right now.

If you want a rifle to modify and tart up, go with the M305.

I've got a 8mm FN-49 and definitely prefer it to my SVT. Not saying it's better, just that I like it more. ;)

If you're just looking for a cheap centrefire blaster, have you considered an SKS? That's the least expensive of any centrefire semi to purchase and feed.

Ideally you would find someone who owned some of these so you could try them out and go with what you like the most.

X2 on that one! :)

Hakim?

If you're considering the 8mm Mauser as a plinking cartridge, you might also look at the Egyptian Hakim as a possible rifle.
Just learn first how to SAFELY load it without letting finger parts in it!
And never put Turk surplus ammo in ANY gas-operated semi-auto.
Good shooting!

My dad has a Garand they dont really excite me all that much for some reason. The nice thin g about 8mm Mauser aside from Surplus ammo is I have the dies and other reloading stuff because of my k98 Mauser.

I also wanted something a little less common too, and the FN 49 -IMO- Fit that bill. Does it have any major issues?

The M305, to put the nice USGI hardwood stck on and any other neccesary part and peices what does it usually cost? This is sort of a re-entry thing for me, Sort of fell out of shooting but what to get back in with something interesting and fun.

I wish I had the money to buy all of them but I have an even more expensive hobby then guns.... Muscle cars! So this is supposed to be a midranged get me away from buying even more expensive car parts hobby.

How hard are the FN-49's to come buy in decent shape? And the Swed I was told by one collector I know "Is long and combersome with a narrow stock and not a visually appealing rifle" Haveing only seen pictures I thought the asthetics where there but I can see that it is long.

He had a very low Opinion of any Russian weapons but most posts I read on the SVT 40 no one bad mouths them much.

I wouldnt mind one of the nice Yugo SKS but again dont know a great deal about them. The reason I was insterested in the FN is the said collector has an FN FAL which I love to death when I got to play with it on the range but seeign how as I cant have one...

Go for the SKS, biggest bang for your buck, ammo is cheap, and you can still fill the thirsty gas tank on your muscle car!

The SKS is definatly in my sights as well... Except I sorta liked the nice Yugo ones that Marstar is sold out of.

As far as the FN-49. How hard to find are they in respective calibers? Any issues they have? Obviously I am buying a semi auto so accuracy isnn't my biggest thought but I dont want to shoot around corners either how do they preform?

FN49 Accuracy might.....

.... very well surprise you.

My 7x57 is capable of 10 round groups under an inch and a half with commercial hunting ammo, the 175gr loads no less.

My brother has an 7.9mm Egytian that comes fairly close.

I have no experience with the SVT or FN. The AG42B would be the cheepest to buy, but the M-14 would be cheeper in the long run cause of ammo. AG42B's are alittle picky on the ammo so if you don't reload this may be a problem. However, I don't reload and I get great results out of mt AG42B with factory BELL ammo. It's all a matter of finding the right round for your particular rifle.
