My friend and I are planning a 3 to 6 day hike and I need to get a shotgun for defense against bears and cougars and such. Must be compact but deployable. Suggestions?

the 14" nornico would be good but I don't know if marstar has any left.

an 18" rem 870 would be the next thing. around $330 at sir etc.

14" Norinco, 870 Express and the Mossberg 500/590/Maverick 88 are all good options.

I'd recomend something with sights and slugs though.

Mik... is it 3 or 6 days... what is your greatest fear bears, cougars or the deadly "andsuch"... and is there such a thing as a non-deployable shotgun :?:
Oh yah... and before I forget... are you planning on using buckshot  :!:  :? :p

G37 nailed it on the first reply.
If you don't have time to practice with your new setup maybe you should get a few cans of bear spray and a big knife. Lighter to carry and you will both have something on you in case of an incident. Practice with the bear spray so you've got an idea of it's range and try to avoid attracting unwanted visitors at camp with your food. Even with a gun bear spray on your belt is a good idea.
