If you don't have time to practice with your new setup maybe you should get a few cans of bear spray and a big knife. Lighter to carry and you will both have something on you in case of an incident. Practice with the bear spray so you've got an idea of it's range and try to avoid attracting unwanted visitors at camp with your food. Even with a gun bear spray on your belt is a good idea.
