What would be the best product to remove the varnish/shelac job Bubba put on my Lee Enfield? I've read some walkthroughs on refinishing, and everybody seems to have their favourites. I just want to know which one will do it the best, with as little fuss.

Ahh, man! You tricked me!!!! I was expecting pics of semi-clad ladies!:D Should of checked which forum it was under!

You're gonna hate me, but the answer is "It depends.."
How thick is the Bubbizing, did Bubba strip it fully before he "fixed" it, etc, etc.

Lacquer thinner works wonders on finishes, but beware, it is nasty, nasty stuff. If you use it, get a respirator with an organic vapour cartridge and use it in a well-ventilated area. And use gloves.

Best I can tell, Bubba didn't bother to strip the stock, just painted the gunk right on. Best I can describe it, feels like hard plastic. The rifle is in great shape, and the bore is very sharp with little to no pitting; it's just the stock is so freaking ugly. :(

If bubba just slathered on the finish, without doing any sanding, there is a very good chance that yo can strip it off chemically and fing the wood to be in great shape. I've used Circa 1867 stripper, go to the paint section of any hardware or building supply store and you will find a variety of products. Some are rather "green" - environmentally friendy. Many contain MEK. Watch your skin and eyes, as well as the fumes. Take yor time, let the stripper do its stuff, and you may be pleasantly surprised.

I use some stuff from 3M, and it can be cleaned up with water, is relatively safe, and can be bought at Canadian Tire...sorry I for got the name.

I use Circa 1891 Safe Citris stripper from Home Hardware or any hardware store. Works great, washes up with water and is much easier to use than the methylene chloride based stuff.
