Looking for recommendations or advise on a tang sight for a Chiappa 1886 in 45-70 I have. 26” barrel.

So far it seems like the Lyman no2 sight will be the best option.

Has anyone ever experienced any issues with putting a Lyman sight on a Chiappa? Doe the mounting bolts for right and have the correct threads?

Unfortunately , mounting tang sights on a gun is not just a "one fits all scenario. Yes, the screws are not all compatible from manufacturer to manufacturer nor is the tang angle to barrel bore the same from gun to gun ( even different models within a manufacturers lineup can have differences) so different bases are offered by all the sight manufacturers so you have to match them up with what you need. If you get the wrong angle base you will not have a perfect round sight picture through the aperture....pretty much a compulsory factor
The good news is that all the sight manuf have a very good handle on the differences and their listings can be followed. They will also have a screw chart listing and supply the proper one for you order at the same time. The problem is finding someone with the stock # that you require.

I'm sure you will find the proper one for your rifle, just dont run down to your LGS and buy the first peep sight you see...it might not fit

Thanks for the input fingers.

This is the sight I was looking at ordering. Says for Winchester and browning, and to my knowledge the Chiappa is a very good copy of the winchesters.

I’ve never used or mounted a tang sight before so thanks for the info to look at. I was alternatively looking at getting one of the skinner barrel mount peep sights that is case hardened and adding it instead of a tang sight.

Im not sure that the WGP listing will have the right screws for your tang. I;m with Chasseur that Montana Vintage would be my first go-to, Buffalo Arms second and if you want to stay on this side of the border Pro-line Sports in Calgary probably have a listing for a Marbles brand sight. Personally I prefer the Marbles brand as they offer easily changable staff heights.

100% go with MVA. They are more expensive but my god do you get your money's worth. They will know exactly which base you should use for your rifle. Not only that, but the amount of accessories and adjustments you can make to your sights, means the MVA can be adapted for almost any use.

I would also swap your front sight for a Beach type flip up. They are excellent on an 1886.

Honestly I would mount a barrel mounted ladder sight on a lever rather than a tang sight. That's what I put on my 1885. I believe that it was the Smith Long Range M95 from Brownell's. I prefer the M95 as opposed to the regular Smith Long Range because I prefer the notch on both the regular and elevator, as compared to a hole, which is what the regular Long Range one has along with a regular buckhorn for the standard rear sight.

Lyman sights are great. Pedersoli sights will work well on this Chiappa too. Check Rusty Wood, Track of the Wolf, MARSTAR, etc.

Btw, Most Chiappas are drilled and tapped for these sights, but almost always require shimming to center everything up (my Chiappa Sharps did for sure). If you can handle that, it's a pretty straightforward job.
