One of most enjoyable sub-veins in my shooting hobby over the past years has been in the design and fabrication of my own targetry. I've made many different steel gongs out at my range, and more recently have moved into die-cut and printed cardboard. I've done a life-sized mule deer, a life sized grizzly bear (see below), and now, as a result of the canada targets thread on their Herman-the-German design, I have been working on a service-rifle-styled infantry silhouette. I'm going to produce a bunch right away, for use this summer at an invitational service rifle style shoot I'll be hosting on my private range. Before I commit though I figured I'd seek feedback from the crowd here at CGN as you folks always (or should that be "mostly"
) have good ideas.
Here's what I've been working on:
I've included the original Herman as a basis for comparison. My initial attempt resulted in image #3, and was just about set to start the production process when I solicited feedback from about a half a dozen people. I was surprised how much resistance there was to the idea that the target might look like an ERT/SWAT guy, so I went on hold for a bit and went to work on the design using themes more easily recognizable as "THE ENEMY" within North-American popular culture that resulted in #1 and #2.
Which one do you like the best? Why? Other alternatives worth exploring?
To simulate what they might look like through glass at 300, 400, or 500 yards, here is a smaller version:
And as promised, here is a vanity shot of me after a super-fun range day where we broke out the bear target. The mini-14 I was using is the gun which was the subject of my last project: the .300 Blackout mini-14.
Thanks for your feedback!
Cheers,
Brobee
