Hi All,

I'd like to buy a Tri-Tronics dog training collar but I am not sure which one. I'm on a bit of a budget so I have been looking at the Sport G3 series but I can't decide which one.

Train up to three dogs from the same transmitter (purchase extra receivers separately)
Field “marry” new receivers to you transmitter easily - extra straps (red & blue) for future dogs included with transmitter
Two easy dials select your dog and set your intensity
Fully functional multi-dog system.

Rechargeable collar (charger and cradle included)
2-hour charging
9-volt replaceable battery (included) in the transmitter

Or the Sport Combo G3
Up to 20 levels of continuous or momentary stimulation with your choice of mode
Continuous-priority, momentary-priority, or basic mode
Basic mode includes no-stimulation tone

SPORT UPLAND G3
A Beeper and training collar in one with full multi-dog capability
10 levels each of continuous and momentary stimulation
Activate the Beeper from up to half a mile away
All-new ergonomic transmitter design with large buttons, easy-to-use dials, and rubberized grip
Train up to three dogs from the same transmitter (purchase extra receivers separately)
Field “marry” new receivers to you transmitter easily - extra straps (yellow & green) for future dogs included with transmitter
Two dials select your dog and set your intensity
Fully functional multi-dog system
Half mile range
Integrated antenna is only 1-1/2”
Waterproof
Long and short contact points for all coat types
Rechargeable collar (charger and cradle included)
2-hour charging
9-volt replaceable battery (included) in the transmitter
Beeper includes: Range/Point and Point-only modes
High and low volume
Beeper on/off and locate feature are operated from your transmitter
Four run tones: single, double, triple beep, tracking tone
Two point tones: single tone, hawk scream
Fits larger and smaller breeds
30-day satisfaction guarantee and a 2 year warranty

Is there an advantage to a buzz, vs. audibule tone, vs. a beeper? That seems to be the main difference. I will likely only ever be out with one dog, and most certainly will never exceed three.

I've got a Sport 60--only one dog at a time but it works perfect. Mine has a button for audible tone and the dogs know real quick to smarten up if they here it--doesn't even have to be on the dog thats wearing the collar if they are smart and traind right with it.

Out of the three you have listed, the Sport Combo G3 would be my pick. I find that the more choice of stimulation the better. Personally I find the Sport models run pretty "HOT" as they are. I have only used one sport model and even the lower settings were much "HOTTER" that my Pro 500 on a higher setting.

Also, I do really like the extra distance that the Pro Models offer, especially working in hilly terrain, or when you are hunting and that new dog "Takes Off" on you chasing a cripple or what have you. Having the extra distance may mean a dog that stops before a road, or some other nastiness, and could save your dogs life.

You can get a good deal on used collars from the Collar Clinic
ht tp://www.collarclinic.com/ in the states. Going with an older model Pro Series collar would be a better choice if you are on a budget, IMHO.

Relooked at your post and didn't get to all of your questions:

Beeper models are generaly used by Bird Dog types, I'm pretty sure you mentioned before that you had a Lab. Anyways, the beeper is to locate the dog, or know where it is in cover. Generally with retrievers you have an eye on them, and know where they are at all times.

I have an audible tone on my Pro 500, and I never use it. I figure if the dog is doing something wrong they should know about it right away, no warnings in other words. Some people have come up with other uses for the tome and vibrate function, but I have never seen the use. Hand signals, voice commands are all I use.

I see you are in London, are you looking for a Club to join?
Maybe we could hook up sometime and get out training.

I use a DT Systems, Micro iDT3000
16 levels of stim with a vibrator. I harldy ever shock the dog, however, I use the vibrator all the time to recall him. Works great. $279 from GunDogSupply.com, one of the more inexpensive models.

I am a member at EESA for shooting, or did you mean a dog club? Either way I'd love to meet up with someone more expeienced to learn. I have already done my PAL, RPAL, and Hunter's course but they just cover the basics...

Chris there is a member at EESA who has been looking to start up a "Dog training" group for some time now.

I was going to participate but lack the time.

Let me know and I can hook you two up.

Nope, more meant if you want to join a Retriever Club.

Our Club SWORTC http://www.swortc.org/ is holding a Hunt Test next Weekend at Hullet Marsh. You might be interested to see some dog work, and what they are capable of. All the info in on the website on how to get to Hullet, times etc.. Any questions, just ask.

Chris:

Shelter Valley is about the closest: http://www.campinginontario.ca/sheltervalley/

I think most peolpe who camp for the Hunt Test stay there.
The Pinery is about 45 to 50 min. from Hullet if you don't mind the drive.

I will be the guy thats taking the pics of the dogs throughout the day for our Website, introduce yourself. Three different stakes will be running; Junior, Senior and Master. It should be fairly well signed around the marsh, so you know where to go. Try not to wear anything white, as it tends to distract the dogs, dark coloured clothes are the best.

Crazy dog people.....

I've got a sport 60 and a classic 70 in the G1 and G2 models.

I like the beep in the sport 60 and I've trained my pointing dogs to recall when they hear it. I don't find much use for the beep or buzz anyway. If I need to warn my dog, they likely deserve a zap anyway.

I've also never found much use for a distance greater than 1.5 miles or range or a momentary zap. I just use a continuous zap either quickly or held until the dog corrects. 20 - 30 levels are kind of useless too because they don't generally provide any stronger correction, just more intermediate levels of intensity. A collar with a 1-5 or a 1 - 20 both have the about the same strength when set to their highest.

I wouldn't bother with the beeper collar unless you expect your lab to point pheasants and partridge. Waterfowl dogs don't usually get lost like my pointers who stand still in tall grass. I also wouldn't buy a 5 or 6 dog model as it's a real pain to keep track of which dog has which coloured collar and is the control set on the right dog....I find 2-3 dogs per contol is usually enough.
