Hey guys

I'm in a bit of a pickle figuring out what kind of gun I should be shopping for/researching.

Here's what I've figured out I need.

1) I'd like a semi auto. I'm a lefty. I know there's left handed bolts out there, but I just really like shooting semi's.

2) I want something I can use on coyotes/varmints

3) Something that could be used for home/farm defence if it ever came down to it.

4) Something affordable. $400 maximum.

5) Something scope-able.

Am I out to lunch or are these things possible? I am considering a russian SKS but that seems like a little too much juice for what I'm after, plus I've heard they're a b*tch to scope. The price is sure right though.

Any info/suggestions are much appreciated.

NBX.

hey NBX welcome to CGN
I'm not sure you are gonna find what you are looking for $400.00 in a semi-auto.
First thing, there are good semi's and bad semi's in my opinion the SKS is a bad semi.
a good one might be the browing BAR or the Benelli R1
most good semi's would cost a far bit more than $400 say $7-900.00 for the BAR and more for the R1. plus the scope.

as for the home defence thing by a shotgun or a big dog.

If you do a search on semi autos you should find all the info you require and then some
alot of CGN'ers dont like them and alot do. After reading the posts you can decide if the semi auto is the right gun for you.
good luck CDN1

What you need is a Remington M597 in .17HMR, just under $400. cheers

KG do you think the the .17HMR is a good choice for varmits and predators?
it would be very suseptable to wind and range for coyotes.
if anyone were to choose the .17 I'd recomend keep your shots on fox and coyote under 100yrds

I'd want somthing bigger to stop a bad guy!
cdn1

The SKS is not a "bad semi". It's probably the most reliable and durable semi I own.

SKS's aren't that difficult to scope either. Any competent gunsmith can drill and tap for a receiver side scope mount. Just browse around the red rifle forums for the SKS stuff. There is also a wide array of after-market parts for the SKS. Surplus ammo is dirt cheap, but if you want good accuracy you will have to handload. I've seen sub 1 1/2-inch groupings on a properly tuned SKS with good brass and bullets.

The only other thing I can think of would be the Norinco M-14S, but that's about $100 over his price range.

But for $400 you could very easily get an SKS, mount, scope, have it drilled and tapped by a smith, and probably get a nice after-market stock as well.

hmmm. Maybe I do need to re-think this. I'm totally open to getting a used gun, and on the home defence side, I already have a mossy 500 and a greyhound, so I'm covered at that side of things.

Maybe I need to think about two guns covering this off.

Oh yes!the remington m597 semi in .17HMR is just under $400,easy to scope and the .17HMR is very suitable for varmints/predators,using hornady v-max 17gr,the velocity at muscle is 2560 fps, that is fast:D It is flat at 200 yrds. I hit few fox and gophers between 200-300yrds past summer.(yes,it's kinda suck if is windy...will it's a rim-fire).cheers
and for the bad guy? it's not much different between if you use a .22 or the 7.62.

I am pretty sure a shipment of russian SKS's just came in to Canada (Going by how almost every dealer i know of just got some in) They are all brand new and still covered in the Cosmoline preservative. They go for around $280 and you can get a 1200 round case of surplus for around $300. Some places will even give a package deal with both the rifle and ammo.

The 1120 round cases of ammo usually go for about $200.
