If thats your only options I would go with the maple. Butternut though related to walnut is very soft and porus and tends to split and chip easily while being worked, dosen't take checkering well. I made a butternut stock many years ago and it was not great and wanted to compress when the action was tightened up, very soft. Apple if you can find a piece large enough to have good grain layout may not be bad, have never worked with it. maple is good, a little heavy, hard and very strong, has a history of being a good stock wood and can be very beautiful.

x 2 for Fiddleback Maple ... if that's what you are referring to.

If you can get a look at a 2006 Winchester Catalog ... see p.49 for
a nicely done Model 70 in Fiddleback Maple.

You might also look at:

www.wenig.com

Look in "Catalog" (on-line) by clicking on the catalog picture.
There is a nicely stocked Over & Under in Fiddleback Maple in the illustrations.

What cartridge are you using and what type of shooting are you doing? Lets do the basic first.

my great uncle gave me his winchester model 88 in .308 it's cracked at the pistol grip and i will be using it for deer and bear.

In my opinion an 88 is a ##### to inlet! If you do it yourself you want a wood thats easy to work. And due to the nature of the 88 the grain in the wrist needs to be laid out perfect.I would buy a walnut stock from Boyds or have them build you a laminate.Unless you can talk Ian into making fiberglass ones for us:beerchug:.I still have one to build in either 270-08 or 7-08.

The 88's and 100's require a good stock to last. Quality wood and a quality job of layout and inletting.

I would also suggest a laminated semi inlet or a synthetic stock... there is a reason why all the suppliers ran out of factory replacement stocks...

 awe you mean this old thing

AS far as I know nobody makes a synthetic for 88-100 series.
