Which would be better, a 45-70 or a 12 guage shooting slugs?

Not an expert on these cartridges by any stretch of the imagination but the 12 guage with slugs looks like it can give the 45-70 a real run for its money???

Another definite vote for 45-70 Gov. I prefer a strong single shot so you can make some nice fun loads!

12 ga vs. .45-70 Govt.

Don't discount a 12ga with 1 oz rifle slugs boys... Bet a nice Rem 870 12 ga with a rifled barrel with rifle sites could hold it's own against a .45-70 with iron sites within practical hunting ranges +/or close quarter shooting. [And before you Quigley downunder types start going off all half-cocked read "PRACTICAL HUNTING RANGES"].

Don't get me wrong, I've got a vintage Win 1886 SRC in .45-70 and have also owned a couple of Browning '86's over the years, too. And I love the .45-70 Govt.

I'm just saying, don't discount the 12ga with slugs in the proper set-up...

I vote semi sluggun... plenty of accuracy and faster follow up shots... 385 grain core loct slugs going 1900 fps with over 3000 foot pounds of energy.
I will race any lever 45-70 for speed and MOD (minute of deer) accuracy inside a 150 yards with any of my semi slugguns.

Seriously though BR enlighten me here, I have no experience with slug guns let alone semi autos. What kind of accuracey can you get at 100 yds? I see there's a lot of fancy projectiles out these days but isn't the accuracey still a little dicey? No?

There ARE some special shotgun slugs that are meant for rifled slug guns which closely mimick the performance of the 45-70.

But i think at the end of the day - the 45-70 is just a more powerful gun.

As to what's 'better' ... depends what you like and what you're doing with it.

Regular accurate supreme firepower at most rnages the 45-70 has to be the preferred item.
If you're under hunting restrictions where high powered rifles aren't allowed then a slug gun is a ready alternative but not if you have a choice.

I would take the 45/70 myself for accuract and more predictable bullet path to the target.
