Which Would You Buy?? Not on the List, But Found It!!

Got the itch to add an "accurate" 22 to my collection, so I've been combing the threads here, there and Rim___Central to get an idea of quality, accuracy etc.

So here's what I'm considering:
Weatherby XXII (new bolt)
Browning T-Bolt (new bolt)
CZ Varmint 453
Savage MKII Classic

Most important is accuracy shooting standard type ammo. Don't want to get into the expensive stuff, just not my cup of tea. Like to go out to the range or a buddy's cabin and fire off a brick at a time.

Anyone out there have any of these and what are your thoughts?? My research has provided the following facts?opinions?

Weatherby - fussy about ammo, likes the expensive crap and not necessarily extremely accurate, no more so that any of the others.
Browning - accurate, but apparently has a plastic and very crappy trigger setup.
CZ - don't hear much bad??
Savage Classic - basic Mk dressed up, but still seems to be pretty accurate.

A big plus for me is the adj. trigger setup as I like "hair" trigger shooting. So.....which should I buy??

Picked up a Remington 541T and I'm looking forward to receiving it. From the reading I've done, this rifle is supposed to be one of the better Remington's produced. It sure looks purdy and can't wait to get my hands on it. Anybody else have one of these? Comments?

From your list, the CZ. Off your list a used Anschutz...

I'd say, try to find people who own these rifles and ask them to lend you the gun for a few test shot at the range. Maybe they will tell you what they think about the rest of the rifles on your list. (Most likely, they will prefer their own rifles but a small information about other guns will help you to narrow down your choices.)
I have a Savage MK II FV (standard blue finish, heavy barrel). That rifle is by far the most accurate .22 not only in my collection but out of those I've ever fired. The Accu Trigger is very smooth and the rifle is a joy to shoot. I'm in the process to replace the synthetic stock with a Boyds Evolution (just need to buy a trigger guard and magazine plate). I would certainly recommend the MK II.
Going to a gun store is probably a good idea but I would very much doubt that any store would have all these rifles in stock.
Also, Internet research - what you're obviously doing... - can be very helpful.
Good luck in your search and keep us updated about your final decision.

I was leaning towards a CZ 453 Varmint. None were available locally but I was able to handle a 452 and liked it. However, in the end I bought a Savage MKII BV and am glad I did. Here's why:

- The gun is beautiful. Much better looking than in pictures.
- It has a quality feel. Well fitted, smooth action and controls, no tool marks or rough spots.
- Comes with standard Weaver-type mounts already attached. (This was a significant factor for me, since I didn't really feel like searching for rings that would fit the European sized dovetail grooves on the CZ.)
- The adjustable Accu-Trigger is very nice. Possibly not as light as the single set trigger on the 453, but certainly good enough for my casual target shooting (and far, far better than the standard trigger on a 10-22.)
- The safety works in the normal fashion, back safe, ahead fire. The CZ uses a more unusual European type.
- It's very accurate. After sighting it in I put five shots into one ragged hole smaller than a dime at 25 yds. I'm pretty sure it will be extremely good at longer ranges but haven't had a chance to try that yet.
- Costs about half as much as a CZ, leaving plenty left over for a good scope.

If price is no object you might prefer one of the other makes you mentioned, but the Savage is a very nice gun for a very reasonable price.

I have 2 cz's among many others, and i allways end up shooting the sporter , i did a little trigger work and bedded it, stuck on a 6x compact leopold, dialed it in with winchester hp...and never looked back.....I hope you end up getting one, you will not regret it

CZ. I have two Savages both brand new. One of them is a .22LR with accutrigger and the other is .22WM with standard trigger. I would trade both of them in for another CZ. My CZ is more accurate with non premium ammo and I can't wait for my premium ammo to arrive. Oh yah did I mention it also cycles a hell of a lot better. The Savage DM's are crap and I wish I never ordered so many spares when I ordered my guns because all of them are junk. I am tired of having to stand on the Savage .22WM bolt in order to get it closed........stupid feeding problem with the garbage DM's. The machining of my Savages look like rough cut pine:D especially the bolt. Spend a little more and get what you pay for. I can't comment on your other two choices as I have no experience with them. My $.02.

The Weatherby is an Anschutz and is deadly accurate. The T-bolt has a great trigger not crappy, and drives the bullets where you aim. I do not know if you have shot both but you should, and then decide. No ammo problems with XXII either, ate all it was fed without any problems. It is the nicest looking one of the bunch also. I picked up a limited edition T-bolt in gray laminate and SS barrel and love everything about it. The straight short pull is very quick and smooth.

Wayne I am about starting to make a post on the guns you mentioned as I just received a Marc XX11 22lr weatherby came with a good target 4 in one hole and one off just a bit. I have not shot it yet.
Friends at range have guns you mentioned and I have the Weatherby to compare with Brow, CZ,Savage, all new this year, right now they all shoot similar at 100y about a 1" 5 shot groups but so does my old Rem 581.
I was at range with a 540xr yesterday and I beleive the 540 will out shoot the others from testing some different ammo yesterday.
We will test all guns and post soon, Will be using 3 types of ammo Ten-x,Fed Gold match and Rem target in each gun and all guns will be shot with 4 different shooters, at 50 y and 100, and the 2 top guns will shoot at 200 as well should be interesting results.

Look forward on hearing the results!

I read a magazine test recently of this rifle... it was the most accurate rifle of ANY kind/caliber they had tested. They were gob struck.

Looking Forward To The Results

Hey manitou210, I too would be eagerly awaiting the results. And to the rest of you guys that have posted, thanks and keep the info. coming, but you're sure not making it easy on a guy.

I mean, based on the posts, it would appear that I should go out and buy one of each, which of course I was hoping to avoid.

I own a savage in 17HMR. and I am impressed with the quality and accuracy of the rifle out to 100 yds. I'm not really a less than 50 yd. shooter, and my hope with posting this list is to get a rifle that would be very accurate in the 50-100 yd range. This opens up the spectrum of bench or gopher shooting possiblities, although since moving to B.C. many years ago where there are no gophers to be had, the latter seems to be a way-off possibility.

Again, thanks for the comments and keep them rolling.

Got 2 Coming!

Marlin 2000L - new and unfired, should be here on Monday. Definitely a bench or competition rifle. Peep sight with 10 inserts. It's only a single shot, but after much searching, I was able to track down the "Summer Biathlon Kit" that changes out the bottom access. rail to one cut out for a 5-shot mag and mag release. That's been ordered from a the U.S. co. that made them for Marlin. I own 2 other Marlins and they are impressively accurate, so I thought I couldn't go wrong on this one.

Remington 541T - looks minty, has adj. trigger and should be a joy to shoot. That's being shipped soon as CFC completes the transfer. I should get it by the end of the week. Need to pick up a scope for this one, so I'm on the hunt today. Plan to go out to a few dealers and check out their stock.

Anyway, the next couple of weeks should be some fun times at the range playing with the new toys.

But, I'm still yearning for one or more from my list. And a guy can never have to many .22's, right?
