I am looking at purchasing a rifle for some hunting but mainly range shooting out to 500m. I"ve settled on .308 Win from one of the following rifles:

- Savage FV
- Rem SPS
-Winchester Coyote

My price range is 500 to 800 for the rifle. Which one would you pick ?

The savage is not really a 'hunting' gun per se--it's very heavy, intended for shooting paper and varmints. It's also ridiculously accurate, which the other two rifles certainly can be, but they don't have that reputation for sub-MOA accuracy (at least, not without bedding, trigger work, etc.).

If you're looking for a cheap hunting rifle, then yes the SPS is a fantastic buy. If you're serious about 500 yard target shooting, then you should be looking at a heavy barrel target rifle, and the FV is the only one on your list.

I'd try to get to handle examples of each so I could pick whichever seemed to fit me best. And if it turned out to be the Remington, I'd start over looking at others because Remington seems to have a bad attitude to their Canadian market.

FV for me if I was looking for a dedicated range gun. The SPS for any other applications because I like the 700 action and most BDL's fit me and feel good in my hands.

+1.

Can't go wrong with that suggestion... ;)

Savage... I'm a "stand" hunter and I don't mind the extra weight...

You can always "use" the accuracy that the Savage product is developing a reputation for...

I wouldnt pick a SPS for 500 meter shooting, I'd go with the Model 700 VLS

heavier, longer barrel, and a much more stable laminate stock. a big hefty rifle, but still portable enough to use for hunting.

that'd be todbartell's pick (around $750)

Hoo-rah. ;)

I'd go to the exchange forum and buy a great used firearm here, better prices and somebody else has probably adjusted the trigger and fixed the bedding.

The Savage has an exellent trigger and my LE2B was very accurate out of the box. That would be my inclination.

X2

I had a stock FP 10 in 223 and it shot pretty much all commercial rounds I feeded it into an inch from 45 to 69gr....with best loads going 1/2''. If you think its too heavy, have the barrel cut and recrowned to 20'', it will add to barrel stiffness, you'll be good up to 500 yard, and it willd balance the gun better as the stock is pretty light. Costs around 50$ And the trigger is good!!

Acuracy is what you want to look for in any rifle IMHO.
