I have been looking over the 8X57s at Tradex.

But I am wondering which one is better the 96 or 98?

What do you guys think?

Pictures of yours would be appreciated too.

M98 again why an 8X57?
I own that caliber and it sits in the back of the gun case.
.323" bullet verses .30".
I would bet the 06 would kick comparible to the 8X57 or less.
One can find ammo for the 06 at just about any Canuck Buck or Wallymart.
Not so with the 8X57.
Seems as though Tradex has some decent deals on the 30-06.
Husky 1600's are probably worth considering also.
Just came from TradeX, check out this item #9085.
Good luck, regards, L

I have a G43, which is 8x57, that is my safe queen. I like the caliber. It is very accurate and comfortable for me to shoot. I have lots of brass and all of the reloading equipment.

Also I have a 30/06 that I can hunt with. I thought an 8x57 would be nice to add.

Keep the comments coming. I appreciate everyone's input.

It seems everyone agrees the 98 is the better rifle.

Some of those 96 actions from Tradex, are commercial rather than military. The same can be said for the 98s.
The one glaring difference between the two is the availability of parts. The 96 actions have a very limited supply available while the 98 actions have tons of parts and accessories available. It depends on what you're going to do with the rifle.

I personally like them both. I really like the 8x57 as well as the 6.5x55. The 8x57 can and does perform on the same level as the 30-06 when it is loaded to its intended pressure range. There are lots of good bullets available now for the 8mm bore as well, both foreign and domestic brands. Brass can be made from 30-06 cases if it's a problem to obtain. Off topic, but I once bought two boxes of 5000 each range pick up 30-06 cases from a range in the lower mainland of BC. I converted those cases to just about anything with the same rim diameter. Best deal I ever made.

The 98 also has a few cousins. There are small ring 98s, such as the Mexican model, and the shorter receiver, such as the Yugoslavian reworks.

The Tradex rifles are "standard length".

If you're just going to clean the rifle up, it will need it, and use it as is, it won't matter which one you buy, they're both excellent designs and absolutely reliable performers.

If you're going to upgrade the rifle and add after market parts, buy the 98.

Things like beautiful double set triggers, complete with trigger gaurds, show up at gun shows all of the time. They usually sell for pennies on the dollar as well. They've gone out of favor now that there are so many adjustable triggers available, that are so easy to install and adjust.

Why not the 8x57 ? mine pushes a 195 hornady 2650fps with 50.3 of RL 15 and will put 3 under an inch at a hundred yards all day long. Its an excellent cartridge and in the 98 actioned husky makes a very nice rifle.

What is the web site for the Tradex you speak of?
Google gives every trading site in the world, except this one, well, more or less.
Anyway, can't find it on Google.

The only reason I can see to pick the 96 over the 98 would be to get the 6.5x55 caliber. If that isn't an issue, then the 98 has pretty much every other advantage, as noted.

The 96's and 94's have their place too. They are usually cheaper than the 98's. They are slim, lightweight rifles. The 98's are usually bulkier and heavier. ####-on-open isn't as big of a deal as most people make it out to be, especially when there is game in front of you. Yes they lack the 3rd lug and better gas venting of the 98, but if you don't load the snot out of them, it's not an issue.

Here is one in 9.3x62 that I picked-up from Trade Ex. It weighs 7.6 lbs with a sling and a 4x32 Bushnell. I just need to have the over-sized bolt handle replaced.
