I have a choice between these calibers:

.223 Rem
.22-250 Rem
.243 Win
.25-06 Rem
.270 Win
.30-06 Sprg
7mm-08 Rem
.338 Win Mag

I already own rifles chambered in:

.22 LR
7.62x39
7.62x54R
.308 Win
.300 Win Mag

What would YOU choose for a new caliber given the choices if you were in my position? I hunt every size NA game and mainly shoot target year round several times per week. I learned to shoot with a .308 and have grown to like a kicky gun, they make me smile. However, I have rarely shot anything under .30 cal.

I just recently started using the .22. I wouldn't mind it if it didn't sound so.... hollow and air-like when firing it. I feel like a child when I use it. As much as I enjoyed my childhood.... oh wait, no I didn't. I don't want to go back there.....

So, your recommendations please? If you were in my shoes. :)

Please list the benefits of cartridges over the others and what not. I would like to be educated on these different calibers. I would prefer hands on experience. I dunno, really just whatever you want to throw at me. I hope this is in the right section.... :HR:

EDIT: Forgot to mention, I might be looking to retire and replace my .308 for another .308, so if I don't come to a conclusion, .308 it will be. :)

well sense you are wanting to hunt all sized game and you seem to like the 30 cal rifles i would get a 30-06. i was recently talking to a good guy that lives in BC that has an alaskan friend that has actually taked a HUGE brown bear in self defense with the 30-06. so you can take any animal in north america. you can also get a 30-06 chamber adapter and hunt game all the way down to squirrel! So squirrel to huge brown bear or grizzly bear is a pretty good rifle. the problem is you are wanting to target shoot with it alot? maybe a 223 would be a good gun.

Yeah, target shooting is definitely a problem. I have fired hundred of rounds through my .300WM. I REALLY like this round. Very accurate at long range. But even reloading, the .300 is expensive when you go through as many rounds as I do in a week. I have been leaning away from .30 cal in my research for a new caliber in favor of less costly ammo.

Clearly the answer is to buy two guns.

I don't plan to stop buying rifles any time soon. :) I will collect and collect!

What are the essential calibers everybody needs to own? Is that a more appropriate question? Possibly?

I own and shoot all of those except the 25-06.

The 223 can be made very accurate all the way to 1000 yards if you have a fast twist (1:8) and shoot heavy bulllets.

The other caliber that really impresses me is the 260 Rem. Very accurate and good for hunting.

the cals you have now would work its all about what you like the .22lr gets shot alot around here and i have shot countless squirrels and rabbits with it. too many guns though for me i like something i can cast for or something that packs a punch at lower vol

You have a very top heavy list of rifles.

If I had that selection as you do, I might suggest the .223.

Cheap fun with milsurp or loaded to target grade accuracy.

Of course, if you ever anned to 'maybe' hunt with it, I would then change my selection to the .243 you have listed.

The 223 Remington.

Why??? Because everything you already have, pretty much duplicates everything on the top list, other than the 22-250 and 223 in perfomance/trajectory.

The 223 would get my vote, soley because there is so much ammunition available for it at reasonable prices.

It's also a very accurate round in good rifles.

Zero recoil and low noise in comparison to the rest as well.

223 for target work
2506 is a great round. 75gr vmax bullets is FUN on groundhogs. Smacks coyotes like the hammer of Thor. Deer and black bear fall just as easy with 117gr -120gr bullets. Some even use it to take moose. Its very flat shooting modest recoil and capable of taking much of north american game. You have the heavier equipment for the heavier game already so the 2506 would fill in nicely. It will do basically what a 270 will do and it beats the 243 in just about everything. Personally I think you need all listed but the 2506 is a great start

Thank you everybody! :) I noticed a few cities over from where I live, they sell surplus of .223 for dirt cheap and from the majority of votes in this thread, it looks like the .223 is what it shall be! :) Thank you very much everybody!
