I've seen pure white coyotes here in New Brunswick, the last time being around 1995 when the deer and coyote populations were quite high and I did not have the pleasure of shooting one. I'm of the opinion that it has nothing to do with cross breeding with a domestic dog. It's just a very rare color variation.

I don't know if it's the same as other dog breeds, but I know that Labs have a single genetic strand that determines their color, this gene has no effect on any other aspect of the dog, only the color of their fir. Some people think that a yellow lab for example is naturally calmer than a chocolate lab, this isn't the case.

Could be the same thing with the coyotes, maybe not.

I tend to hold the same opinion, and believe that most of these cases are due to melanism (accounting for black coyotes as well, by the same measure). But I've had some discussion with a biologist involved in this paper, and she didn't think it was melanism for the white coyotes in Newfoundland. I do continue to have a great deal of skepticism that it has anything to do with a specific instance of 'amour' with a golden retriever, but I'm no geneticist.
