I've never hunted them  Growing up in north central BC there didn't used to be any. None on the island here either.

But, looks like I've got a trip planned in 3 weeks. :dancingbanana: A long lost buddy is in the north Okanagan area and has just got in to hunting.

So tips, ideas, bsing, good stories, or other whitetail talk would be appreciated. Buddy's buddy is an orchardist so there will be some farm land in order. And likely hilly crown land on the valley sides. Another thing I'm not used to - always hunted the wilderness...

So I'm thinking they'll be a bit spooky. Will definitely look for some good still hunting spots. I'll look for sign, trails, hopefully the rut will be getting goin.. Any other ideas :)

well if this is all new style of hunting to you... id recommend the ole shud up and listen to the one,s that know the area...congrat,s on getting into a hunt...keep us posted how it went

mid October probably will put you close to some pre rut activity, but not like it would if your trip was for early november

whitetails are awesome, Ill take one over a mulie anyday

good way to hunt would be to find their travel route from bedding areas to the orchards, and set up there early morning

Check for secondary scrapes under the outer apple branches that are 4-5 feet off ground.
They like to sit hidden on those hills with view, wind to their advantage. Morning & evening are prime ... but don't let your guard at anytime when those critters are horned up.
Try rattling them with a couple of good sticks if the rut is on the upswing ... you don't have to be an expert .... just a few cracks to imitate bucks locking horns.

Have fun!!:)

Ya, I was trying to talk my buddy into going in November, but this hits all bucks for both species and he's a new hunter and really wants a deer so...

Does and this spring's little ones will come out of cover into the fields to graze just before dusk. The bucks are less predictable. If there are does there will be bucks.

During the rut, the bucks are like young men at closing time. All they want to do is f$#& and fight. Some are so smitten that they lose all sense of self-preservation and scamper around in daylight sniffing out the girls.

Don't waste your time in B.C come over to Sask where you can get whitetails like this one :D This guy was shot about an hour or so north of me.

Cheers!!

Advice huh... Well, I've personally had much more success from a tree stand... Not that I haven't shot deer when I was on the ground, but they have been further away OR I get busted and it's been a running shot...

So, I say get yourself a treestand, I use a chain on stand and a couple foot pegs to get up the tree...

Cheers and Good Luck

Keep the ideas and tips comming guys.

Where are you Ontario guys  your surrounded by Whitetails?? Hunting storys welcome too

Practice shooting. Those WT's run at the smallest sign of danger, keep the wind at your face and be quiet. Look for does then wait for the big boy to be the last one to come into the open. Get a grunt tube that you can use with 1 hand.

The wiley old mega-pointer buck will come have 7 different routes into that orchard .... one for each day of the week! ..... that's how he got old & wiley!
