Who can repair a Spanish double 10? Needs a couple parts fabricated

The sad saga of my Spanish double 10 gauge begins on the EE here a few years back, when it was sold to me as in good working order. Alas, it was not -- the pins were dragging, and wreaked all manner of havoc. I "solved" the problem by disassembling the gun. I figured out some of the problem, and deduced how to re-assemble, but without a proper jig, farmed it out to a local aging gunsmith.

Said gunsmith's expertise lay with old-fashioned rifles, not doubles. In the midst of figuring out how to repair, he lost a mainspring and the sear, if I recall correctly. As he's about 119, with one foot in the grave, I never pushed it, and said double lies in pieces in my basement.

I saw it the other day and decided it was time to fix or trash it.

Is there anyone in Canada who could take a Spanish boxlock and re-assmble it, and also fabricate the missing parts? And, not charge me $1000 for the service? Anyone who's familiar with these actions at all would be able to do the assembly in a flash, I think, it's the parts that will be the problem...

Your first problem was taking the gun apart with no experience in fixing that type of gun. Your second was assuming that all gunsmiths have universal expertise with all forms of firearms. Your third and current problem is fiding a good double shotgun smith to fix your gun. Any experienced double gun smith can strip and reassemble your Anson and Deeley boxlock and also make, fit , heat treat and assemble any needed parts. This is all hand work, cut, file, try, fit, try again, reassemble for each try, disassemble to file a wee bit more, over and over until it's right, then harden and final assembly. This takes considerable time and a good gunsmith charges what any other qualifyed professional tradesman such as an electrician or plumber would charge, could make the job not economical. These inexpensive Spanish guns have developed a very poor reputation in general for having poor quality metal and especially poor heat treating and many experienced gunsmiths won't touch them because they get too many come backs and dissatisfied customers. Good luck.

First, without meaning to pile on, I would concur with everything Ashcroft just posted.

I could recommend some smiths fully capable of doing the job but know that it will likely cost more than you would pay to find another comparable gun in good working order. Plus, it will take them a year or more. Good double smiths are not common and most gunsmiths are not qualified to work on SxS doubles.

There is a fellow in Peterborough named Edwin von Atzigen who specializes in shotguns and fine guns. I've had a couple jobs done by him and was very pleased.

Google might help as I do not have a contact #.

Can you tell us a bit more about what make and model of Spaniard it is. Or perhaps even a picture or two of the gun and missing or broken part. There is a chance someone has scrapped one similar to your shotgun and may save you some grief in locating a scarce part. David.
