Hit the woods this afternoon for a quick scouting session. Was able to drive my Grizzly within 500yards of my favorite "Newfie Tree Stand", other wise know as a granite cliff! that overlooks three separate bogs and is basically a Moose Superhighway.
Was getting a little worried, because I hadn't seen too much moving on previous trips, but this time I discovered three nice bulls all by their lonesome. I figure they ranged in age from about 3-5 years old. They did some fighting, snorting, pawing the ground and generally having a grand old time for over an hour. Had a blast sitting on a rock watching them duke it out from about 200 yards away.
At one point, I was close enough to have used my bow...had I thought to bring it! d'oh (we've got a two week bow season immediately prior to the open of gun season). However, I didn't see a single cow! That means there is a bigger bull on the go, 'cause the three amigos were pretty lonely!
Looks like I'm going to have to set up the tent and spend the night there next Friday. Can't believe the non-resident traffic with guys towing trailers, ATVs, etc...and pre-positioning them for the start of the season next week (Sat.)
As things stand now, I'm feeling pretty confident. Kinda' of two minds whether or not I want to take my Moose the first day...more fun hunting than just shooting my animal at first light and having him skinned and quarterd by 8:30AM, home by 9:00 and the quarters hung in the barn by 9:30...and then a full year until next season!
