On mine the crown looks rough.
I have a 53 Russian refurb in laminate. Barrel stamped 1975. Looks Crome lined.
I have to wonder if these sks' were issued to 18 year old recruits for training and dragged through the dirt a time or two with no regard for crown damage.
Mine shoots a 6 inch group at 50 yards. Any thing to improve that would be great.

I did. I also JB weld bedded mine at the same time because mine was so loose in the stock. I had almost 1/4" of back and forth shift in my stock. I can't say it was just the recrown that helped my accuracy. Mine went from 8" down to 3" sometimes even hitting 2" by luck. ;)

I have 2x 54' Izzy laminates and both shoot in the 4 moa range.

The crowns are both good and both are fairly solid in stocks. However ..... I still wonder if they can improved a bit with bedding and crowning ..

This. Probably the biggest improvement to accuracy you can make. Mine was super loose in an ATI stock, so I went back to factory. Group size was cut in half. I then noticed there was a gap where the rear of the receiver contacts the stock. I made a brass shim and installed it. It's now super snug. I'm down to around 1.5"@100. I'm sure my SKS is the exception in accuracy, but regardless, proper stock fit will help ANY rifle.

With surplus ammo ???? If so, that's pretty darn good.

I honestly can't remember, but I think it was. I'm very low on non-corrosive and I'm pretty sure I left it at home that day. It helps that I have a Magwedge rail and a scope on there.

I shimmed the back end of my 50 Tula laminate stock with a piece of hose clamp, which got me 3 inch groups at 40 yards with Chinese surplus ammo.
A zero degree flat crown with a tiny chamfer from the lands to the grooves got me down to 4 inches at 100 yards with the same ammo .
Original iron sights.
