Who Has The Best Deal On The HS 50!!!!

I saw one at the Calgary Gun Show today and asked the retailer 'WSNBNBRSH'. He said, 3wks and the price is $5,400. +GST. He had lots of advice for me on 50BMG I think because he had 5 50cal rifles there. I got a chance to take a look at the HS-50 and he was kind enough to point out the pros and cons of both his guns and the HS-50. I learned a lot today and once I sell my weaker arm of my two or spend a good year at the sperm bank, I'll have enough for a downpayment. Which route I go, I don't know yet but he did send me home with a couple of 50cal pics to take to the bank with me to spend some time with.

I can't realy discuss the full details of my rifle without having everything edited, so here is a picture of mine and further details will have to come in an e-mail if you want.

For guys that are going full custom .50 what components are you using specifically barrel and actions?

I am not trying to sound glib here. Seeing as the US State dept has not approved any export permits for anything 50 except to our government agencies, the customs are just that. Typically smaller manufacturers here in Canada that make their own actions. Barrels can be and are made in Canada as well though many are brought in from Europe. Some of the makers were lucky enough to get the heads up on permits so stocked up prior to the expiration of already in place permits around the time of the "ban" so some NOS exists.
So in answer to the direct question, there is the guy we can't talk about, there is PGW, Gallin and I understand a fellow in Toms Lake BC ? that make 50 cal actions in Canada, there may be more I am not aware of.
Barrels that I have seen used in Canada are Lilja, Krieger, MRC, Walther,Fedderson, Heym as well as some local made customs.
Most of the Canadian makers I know of have some options for stocks as well. McMillan I have seen on most of the Canadian made 50s as well as various types of custom stock made of laminated wood or aluminum.
Hope that helps and does not get deleted for mentioning the unmentionable.
Sad that we have a valuable resource in Canada but can not share info that is helpful except by inuendo. Maybe someday both parties could kiss and make up.

LRC - When I see your gun with that break on it, I'm totally impressed. I can hardly wait to see that thing in action this coming weekend.

Well im still in the learning process with the rifle, hopefully I can do it justice. This will be the first time I realy try and stretch it out so I am going to need some real good spotters. I've got an unfired drop chart figured out to 2 KM's so hopefully I will be in the ballpark enough to do a quick correction and then start turning some of Jerry's boulders to gravel.

Looking forward to the shoot, See ya in Summerland.

I don't understand why the shell holder type" custom" action of HWSNBN is so expensive. It has much less material in it and seems to have much less machining in it compared to a Mc bros or PGW type bolt action. It also would bother me having to remove the bolt every time to load, reload or unload the rifle. All this for 6 or 7000$?.

Actually according to his website the basic rifle is $5500.00 about the same as an HS50 is.
Try buying the equipment to make actions, and then build a few yourself and I would think you will then understand the costs.
If any commodity is pumped out in volume the cost per item goes down, to build anything custom and 1 at a time is labor intensive.
Which means not necessarily cheap.
The removable bolt type in the actions he makes are about the strongest available and certainly have THEE most positive extraction method available. They are very accurate, just slow.

Of the "production" rifles I have to admit the Armalite is a decent rifle. I would prefer it to a Steyr anyday, far better built in my opinion. Unfortunately they are no longer available to Canadians in a new rifle, only used.
I still prefer to have a rifle built to fit me, so have 3 from Calgary 1 Armalite and some others down here that Canada does not like and Bush won't let out anymore.

No offence intended and the Armalite is a nice rifle, but when you compare dollar output I don't see the advantage of going factory over whats available in customs. Im not trying to be arrogant if its the way im comming across.

Backcountry in Fort St. John has one (Styer HS-50) along with the monster Zeiss 6-24X72mm with the 34mm tube. They said they would sell as package or split it. Whatever the customer wanted. They have ammo in stock as well. Price was 5500.00 for the rifle. 10,800 for the package.

Another thing to be carefull of when going to .50. Not from personal experience as I've never shot one. But... I know the local range here isn't certified for .50 rifle rounds. You can shoot the pistols but not the rifle. The range caretaker told me about a guy who showed up with his new HS-.50 Steryl and wasn't allowed to shoot it.

Just a heads up, not all ranges can accomandate the .50.

Neat round but out of my price range. I'll be hanging with the much cheaper 308.

as epoxy says... our range got decertified for .50 cal earlier this year.... the current managment at the range is kowtowing to the cfc to much and not questioning "why" enough.

corlanes, and backcountry have the HS-50 in stock and the basic rifle price is the same, at each store you can get the scope of choice, from big 76,, zeiss 6-24x to a zeiss with a laser range finder built in, swarkovski, luepold, nightforce you name it and it is for sale at either of the stores.

corlanes is the nightforce dealer, but otherwise both stores have identical stock.

so you can't shoot it on some sissy run ranges so what? Go shoot it on public crown lands, or with permission on someones private property.

I can't shoot my 50 on Rosebud or the other homestead ranges, but I can shoot anywere off the road in to the range, or anywhere in the forest reserves that I chose.

try living in an area that if some farmer does not own it there is a gas well or two on it, even trying to find a nice gravel pit close to town to shot in is impossible, it has a well site on it for the most part or is locked gates.

.50 cal + gas well = Darwin award :p

I'd probably keep it in my vehicle. After all you never know when you're going to run into a heard of rogue lightly armoured vehicles :).

Anyways all joking aside, the point was to let people know before hand rather than have them spend 10 grand, go out to the range and be in for a possible disapointment. I would be choked.
