Today I was thinking about this rifle I'm going to be putting together and thought I might like the barrel done and maybe the action also. What is the difference between glass bead blasting and matt grit blasting?

Don't know about the pricing for ceracoat, I do my own with Duracoat. If I'm wrong I'm sure somebody will correct me on the blasting, but I believe that blasting with grit leaves the pores in the steel open, while the small glass beads do not. If the pores are open, oil or any coating will penetrate better. I believe it also leaves a rougher (on a microscopic level) finish that a coating can adhere to better.

I was told by the owner of KG Coatings (gun kote manufacturer) that using glass beads will give you a surface that looks like a golf ball and finish won't adhere to it very well.
Silica sand will rough it up but not as good as aluminum oxide. Apparently aluminum oxide leaves very sharp jagged cuts in the surface.

Alberta Tactical Rifle is the only place that will apply Cerakote on a rifle that i know of. Cost is approx $200-250 per rifle which will include all the prepwork. They did mine, and did an amazing job. Cerakote is the ultiamate spray-on finish and is far superior to Duracoat, Armacoat, GunKote or similar.

If you're interested in applying your own clear, corrosion-proof coating, let me know. You can apply yourself without spraying or baking, and it costs about 1/10th of what some of the spray-on coatings cost.

If you're looking for a coating with color, then carry on... :)

Thanks for the replys and the offer. If I do get the rifle done I will probably go with a matte black.
