So I've been looking for a proper hunting rifle for myself, one that isn't in an oddball caliber or oddball action, and I'm fairly set on a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight in 30-06. Who in southern Alberta has a selection of them for me to look at? Nobody seems to have much of an inventory of these rifles.

If you want a .270WSM or .300WSM (not sure why you would...), there are some in stock at Cabela's stores. I have been on the the phone and talked to every Cabela's store in Canada today.

Number one problem, Cabela's doesn't carry the .270Win. Every store is sold out of the .30-06.

Best bet might be Le Baron's. They list by far the biggest selection of Model 70's in Canada, that I have come across.

Le Barons stores: Markham Ont - 905-944-0682. Mississauga Ont - 905-273-6434. Ottawa Ont - 613-596-4415. Montreal PQ(Quebec, where they still think guns are illegal and should be registered, confiscated and burned...) - 514-381-4231 .

Yes, better call - just because it's in the catalog doesn't mean they have any.

My last inventory list from Browning Canada (who also handles Winchester) was from back in early December.

At that time they (Browning) had exactly TWO model 70's in stock at their eastern warehouse (Montreal area).

One was a Model 70 Sporter in 300 WSM and the other was an Model 70 Extreme Weather Stainless in 308.

(ya, that's it at Browning's own Canadian warehouse)

If most vendors don't order what they want from Winchester "up front" when they put in their yearly order then it's next to impossible to get it afterwards.

Winchester's are somewhat over-priced and the demand for them (at least in eastern Canada) is not very high (like are you willing to pay $1400-1800 for model 94?).

So if you are after one and just have to have it, best keep checking the dealers weekly and the second someone has stock jump on it then, because there is rarely the opportunity for "re-order" when it comes to Winchester's and there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of them ordered in, in the first place.

You can contact lebaron via email and give them the sku number and they will tell you which stores have them in stock.....

Op, if you do decide to go the lebaron route, I would be more than willing to inspect it, pick it up and ship it out to you....

Btw, excellent choice for a first "proper hunting rifle".....

Same problem here in Nova Scotia. I am a Winchester fan, and want another model 70. I have a featherweight, and when I got it, they only had what I wanted....5 in stock and all 308. I'm not right sure what calibre I'm after next, but at the local crappy tire they have 4 in stock...all 270. Not sure which version it is exactly, but they all have iron sights. No selection...but you can pick up a browning or a savage in any chambering you want.

I've been on winchester's website drooling over the 150th anniversary model 70... I imagine I can forget about finding one in these parts. Would probably find a three-legged ballerina much faster.

Correction: Le Barons is sold out of the good stuff (.270Win & .30-06); they still have a few .270WSM, .300WSM and .325WSMs, although I don't know why anyone would want those...

You would think they'd try and get more of the good ones in. All the WSSAUM chamberings are pointless in my opinion. Waste of money for little to no quantifiable gain. A .270 would be okay, but I have nearly 200 30-06 cases and at least 1500 .308 bullets in various weights and styles on my reloading shelf.

I got a sales flying on the computer this am from Cabelas Canada. They have Win. M-70 Alaskans on sale at $1349. Cad. and it shows 300 WM. 338mag, 30-06, and 375 H&H all in stock on line as of 10am Feb 24th.

Ellwood Epps also has a few M70's. Not in the cartridge/calibers that I'm really interested in though.

But they did have a used M70 SS Ultimate Shadow in .30-06, which I bought yesterday.

I am looking for a Featherweight in .270Win.
