Who here shoots an Olympic style free pistol

I have a Toz 35. I haven't tested it on a Ransom rest but it's way more accurate than I can shoot, especially at 50 metres.
I tried several types of ammo and settled on Lapua Center-X. But it will shoot any .22 ammo.
The trigger is set for 30 grams so that was a bit of a learning experience. I still use it to practice, it is similar to shooting air pistol, which I shoot a lot.

Looking for information from members who shoot the single shot Olympic free pistol. What model do you use? How accurate was it? Was it fussy on ammunition?
Did you find it difficult to learn to shoot. Do you still use it or has the novelty worn off?

They are immense fun, and VERY demanding yet relaxing to shoot.

Drulov 70 here with set trigger. Does best with 40gn ammo. spendy stuff is awesome, but will shoot Federal 710's or AE 5022's very well.

Shot free competitions for twenty five years with a TOZ 35 and converted two to top lever locking, made grip sets for a half dozen more. Mine ate anything, always shot better than I would ever be able to. The test target was less tha half an inch at fifty metres. Fun to practise, agony to shoot in competition. Had my trigger initially set so low that someone firing a 44Mag in the next lane set it off on the bench, decided that it was intelligent to set it up around 25 grams and substantially improved my score. To do well it demands dedication and unending practise. "When the brass pile reaches your hip, you might be good" - advice from an old master a lot of years ago.

great quote.

but your old master was wrong. my brass pile is up to my shoulder and i am still waiting for an epiphany.

Zen in a practical application.
Feel your heart pulse, breathing cycles coincide with acute trigger finger sensitivity with constant light pressure on trigger during aiming. To develop confidence in yourself so you don't jerk the trigger.

Do any of you find that it took time to get the elbow used to the shooting position?

Don't follow your question.
How straight do you have your arm?

Should use a bit of strength for firmness around your wrist not to have any wobble there, about the same as a firm handshake.
I think of my arm as a branch of a tree and just let it point to the target so I don't muscle it.

Need to find your natural point of aim every time you pick up the pistol.
Adjust your stance so you can close your eyes, raise the pistol one handed, and the sights should be on target.
Repeat the process until it is. Move one foot until left/right is correct and lean back for proper height.

Dry fire a lot in your basement against a white wall with the idea of keeping the sights centered as you squeeze the trigger.
Don't re-#### the gun, just use the spring return of the trigger.

Hammerli Model 150 with mechanical trigger. SK Rifle Match just a little more accurate than SK Standard Plus.
But my meager experiments with RWS Pistol Match demonstrates another step up in accuracy at 50 meters.
A bonus of, no external lubrication wax to get on your fingers and mess with extraction/ejection.

is there any info on where I can find a range set up for Free Pistol ( aka ISSF 50m pistol ) ?
I used to shoot a Morini CM84E, it was a beautiful gun to shoot. The electronic trigger is really really good.
If I can find a range some where in BC ( not Vancouver island ) I would do it again.
I mostly used RWS or Eley, not the "Club" stuff, but the Pistol Match or Rifle Match.

There used to be on YouTube a superb training presentation for the USSR Olympic pistol team circa 1980. Of course the coach speaking in Russian but it had English subtitles.

I have been unable to relocate it!

I think this is the video you are referring to:

Thank you sir. There is something to be said regards Russian team.commitment to these bullseye events.

Head and shoulders above American efforts except a select few of high discipline athletes and some members USArmy Marksmanship Unit.

It follows this all the best rimfire ammunition derives from European sources. Federal ammo company could care less since the 1988 Summer Olympics.

Confidence in your trigger control? I was at the Canadian Nationals a few years ago shooting in the next bay to a gentleman from AB who had been the Canadian Free Pistol Champ for many years. He has been attending the Nationals since the late seventies and represented Canada around the world. Many will know of whom I speak. As I was shooting next to him I was watching as he TAPS his trigger finger on his free pistol trigger while sighting on the target. I watched him tap the trigger about 10 times before firing the shot. Tapping a trigger that is measured in ounces says a lot about your confidence in your trigger control. That man is a shooter.

A Drulov with a set trigger would be a 75 would it not?, mine was. The 70 was not unless things changed over time.
