who hunts with 7.62 x 39 or the 6.5 Grendel?

Deer... 130 SP's... inside 150... not looking for a debate... that is my opinion.... Slamfire will be along shortly with propellant "Z"... whackin' em & stackin' em at 400 yards with his very special wonder stick, #1 of 1 No.1...

LOL .... Agree :)

I have a single shot Baikal 7.62x39 and a bunch of Hornady 123s. Wouldn't hesitate to use that combo up to 150yds.

My son has a Zastava M85 and just took his first deer a couple days ago using my handloads with 150gr Sierra's (happened to have a bunch with no other use for 311 bullets). It was a 65 yard shot and dropped him on the spot. My daughter has a Ruger Compact and I load 123gr TSX for her rifle which are extremely accurate and perform very well on game. She has taken two whitetail bucks, a mule deer doe and a large black bear boar all dead with one shot, all under 100yds.

I plan on trying the Woodleigh Weldcore 130gr for my son's rifle for next year. I think it's a 100yd cartridge and will perform on just about any game within that range provided you use a good bullet like the TSX. Penetration with the TSX has been impressive and as long as the shot is well placed it will do the job.

I shoot several 6.8SPC's this cartridge is constantly being compared to the 6.5 Grendal I class them as almost the same in performance each having advantages over the other.

I have shot several deer with this cartridge loaded with 95gr TTSX @ 2880fps to 2960fps depending on the barrel length XCR-11 = 18.6" barrel, T/C Contender carbine was 23" now 19" also a 22" barreled Rem 700 LTR.

Place your shot properly and all will do the job it is more bullet type/construction that would limit the range I would hunt game at than cartridge.

I just dropped a nice plump 2 point blacktail buck this last Wednesday morning using the 19" barreled T/C Contender carbine as usual it performed quickly and efficiently exactly as expected.

While I wouldn't personally use it on moose or elk, the TSX delivers enough penetration that a well placed broad side shot should work fine. 100yds tops though IMHO. There are just so many other better choices for larger game that it doesn't make too much sense to use the 7.62x39 unless recoil is a big issue. Even in that case though I would use a 7mm-08 or .260 or something along those lines with much more confidence. My daughter is pretty small and shoots a Vanguard Girls Hunt2 in 7mm-08 loaded with 140gr TSX without issue.

I soon will have a 6.5 Grendel. I intend to use it on bear and deer to 350-400 yards. It's far superior to the 6.8 SPC and the 6.8 has been used on polar bears! :)

holy wow...

Thats great. I'm looking at an SKS right now from westrifle. Is scoping that much better than using the iron sights?

A scope or red dot or an aperture sights make an SKS easier to hit stuff with, because the SKS issue sights suck and that is why people can't hit shat with an SKS.

I would absolutely not reccomend an SKS to a new hunter, regardless of what sort of sight device is chosen. There are far better ways to get from A to B. I took the shot because it was a target of opportunity on a bear that was a troublemaker and needed to die, I had a bear tag and it was open season.

The SKS is not my preffered hunting rifle.

An SKS loaded with 123gr (2350 fps MV) and 150gr (2100 fps MV) bullets has worked on Deer and Bighorn Sheep at ranges out to 250 meters. Proved that it has adequate power with proper shot placement. For larger game I think these loads only have marginal power at best at very close range so I'd be reluctant to try it.

However, my 7.62x39 Ruger No.1 can be safely loaded to well beyond standard ballistics. For example, a 180gr RN bullet does about 2150 fps (using propellant Z:p).

Moose hunting was a success this season so I'd like to give my 7.62x39 No.1 with 180gr RN bullets a try next season to see if I can drop a Bull Moose with it called in at close range. Should work with a broadside shot to take out the shoulder and spinal chord. At 50 meters it has the same power as a .30-06 at 200 meters.

Better than... uhhh... "Aaaaay...Beeeee?"

I know an old guy who shot a nice buck at close to 400 yards with a Winchester 94 .30/30 using the buckhorns... one shot at the base of the skull... I think we should all try that next weekend, eh, GH & Slamfire?
