Im wondering if there is still a good amount of people hunting with this caliber. I have gained a new appreciation for this caliber since I starting reloading for it. I think its great and underestimated because of the mild Factory ammunition. In my opinion When properly loaded the 8x57 is as good as the 30.06 :) Feel free to post your hunting success or favorite loads.

Factory ammo - 170 Grain RN 2350 fps.................
Reload - 175 grain spitzer sp 2670 fps.......not too shaby

IM currently using IMR 4064 but thinking about working up a load with blc-2 or N-150, should be able to make 2800 fps or close without too much pressure.

I shot my first deer with my 8X57, unfortunately not with handloads. I started handloading soon after. I use H414 with great results, I don't have a chrony but the accuracy is there.

I hunt with one sometimes, shot a black bear with one last year.
works as advertised 50.3 gr of RL 15 Fed 210 and a hornady 195 spire point interlock in a Husky commercial FN 98
2640 fps

I have been loading IMR 4064 in Norma brass behind 180 grain Nosler ballisitc tip bullets. Works really well in my rifle.
I really like the Norma factory ammo. They arent afraid to load it hot. Much stiffer than the Win/Rem factory stuff.
Also use Sellier Bellot 196gr factory loads. Again, these are loaded hotter than north american stuff.
It's a great caliber and it does whatever my '06 can do.

the old norma 196 grain loads used to move out with an '06 equivilent- about the worst load was the factory winchester/cil- couple that with the typical too thin mauser stock, and you got a sore shoulder - but when it connected on the other end, it was at least as good as a hot 06

I reload for my Czech 8x57 ,and without maxing it out in my rifle I'm getting some pretty good velocities over the chrony.
195 grain Hornady 2491 fps 47 grains IMR 4895
220 grain Sierra 2487 fps 45 grains IMR 4895
I will be trying different powders but these results are very accurate and should perform well on game. Way to go with getting 2670 fps,did you chronograph those loads?
The 8x57 has more appeal than the 30-06 to me,it's kinda like preferring a nice European design to an everyday import.

Yes, it was chronied, and from a 24" pipe.

The next time I go out I will be working my way down to see what groups best.

I agree with 8x57 having more appeal for me than the '06, its performance lends well to the type of terrain and hunting for this part of the country.

I will test BLC(2) before hunting season then make a decision what will be used.

Hodgdon Data suggests that 53.5 grains will equal 2818 fps(ballpark) with 46,700 CUP of pressure. Again this is with a 175 grain Sierra SPT bullet.

I have a Remington 700 "Classic" in 8x57JS. I have hunted with it enough to shoot a couple of moose and a couple of big Black Bears. I get 2800+ with the 180 BT, and 2650 with the 200 Accubond, using Vihtavuori N150 or N550 powders. The 8x57 is no slouch, and mine will put three 180 BT's touching at 100 meters. The 200 Accubond or Partition. and the 195 Hornady all shoot around 1moa right out past 350 meters. One moose I shot with the 200AB at 265 yards. It was a slightly quartering away shot, and the moose collapsed where he was standing. Bullet was a passthrough. FWIW, I chrony'd some Igman 198 grain SP ammo, and it was right at 2600 fps. Not bad for factory ammo. Great chambering!! Regards, Eagleye.

My mother's cousin uses one in Hungary. He has had good success on many dozens of boar, numerous stags and other smaller game.
