i would just like too know who likes them and what are the advantages too you,and if you do not like them then why don't you
my opinion is they are pieces of junk every semi-auto that i ever shot was garbage even when they were clean and i remember one hunt when my gun jammed on me so i think there garbage what about the rest of you???

only centerfire semi-auto I ever owned was a Winchester 100 in 284 Win,....put a whole 12 factory rounds thru it before I decided it wasn't for me. It jammed twice on 12 rounds.....and I had cleaned it thoroughly, even had it out of the stock and cleaned the gas system....maybe I removed the 60's dirt that was makin' it work  I'd never own another semi-auto centerfire. A friend has one in a BAR in 300 Win Mag, since he got his M70 in 300 Win about 6 years ago, the BAR hasn't left the house...
Semi-autos don't seem to be that popular out west....I don't recall ever hunting with anyone who carried one....or have I ever run into another hunter carrying one.....

 forgot, I did briefly own a Ruger Mini 14.....once.

rimfires maybe; centerfires never. Had remington semi in 308. Junk. Never try one again. As for the rimfire, just bought one, gonna try it out. We'll see.

For hunting I prefer an auto :)
To bad so many of you gunNutz have based your opinion on a bottom of the line basic piece of crap gun
Kinda like baseing my opinion of bolt guns on a 340 Sav or a nice Rem 710

The new Ben R-5 auto is a bit ugly but man what a nice piece of equipment to use!
& it's price is no more than a basic Sako :)

I have a brand new Benelli R1 30-06 with a VXIII 2.5-8X40 for sight-in this morning.... I can't wait to shoot this puppy... I usually only use five rounds max for a sight in... I think I will use a box for this one

Bolt guns only please

:p

I like them as they are auto-loading, and save me that PITA step. No moving my hand to work the bolt or worse some silly lever or pump. Instead, just pull the trigger. Quick second shots.
In truth only downside I had with any of mine, was a Rem 7400 carb that shook the scope turret dials lose (losened up the retaining screws on them, and the reset dials came lose, no biggie, quick fix). That was it.
As I have said a bazillion times now, its all down to the owner and thier maintenace as to determining the reliability etc..

Nice looking rifle, looking forward to your report. Pictures too! :D

Some of the guys out here use Browning BARs and I never hear of them jamming. To me though they seem like they need wheels and a trailer hitch! The nice light ones like the Win 100 seem prone to jamming. Maybe some European ones like the Benelli or a Voere are good but I'll never know and semi-auto capability isn't important enough to worry about it!

I use a Rem 2700 in 270. I love it;after I got the bugs out of it. I use to use hoppes and it would jam. Moved to break free and it seemed to work better. It will only feed Remington Ballistic tips consistantly. Everything else seems to jam up after the second round.

Use break free and Rem ballistic tips and it has not jammed in over 500 rounds. (Not all while hunting). I like to use it, to give myself a break from pistol at the range.

Went to tune my friend's Winchester Model 100 in .308 Win after having replaced its original faulty firing pin for the new profile one.
Put 20 rounds of Winchester's Super-X 150 gr. PowerPoints through it and it shot them without a bobble. Brass was nice.
It had a Leupold 3-9X on it that needed zeroing. Took the first 10 rounds to do, then the other 10 rounds left went into a roughly 1 3/4" to 2" hole just 2 1/2" above the center of the bull at 100 yrds (after letting the rifle cool for about 10 minutes).
I guess that Winchester Model 100 is typical of the Model 100s I have seen.
It is a nice carbine; its only problem is nobody seems to know how to take it apart for cleaning :p
PP.
P-S: Don't knock the lowly Savage 340; you might find someone who can shoot inside your groups with it... I know it doesn't have the looks but it works.

Thanks BR, a very nice looking rifle. Only read one mag article and it was so so in performance. How much? Where did you get it? How heavy?

I will try and find the factory link.

Hey, I like that shooting rest. No wonder you think the recoil is light. Looks like 100lbs of lead ballast

Humm don't know if them auto-rifles are any good, guess I could ask a few German soldiers how thier Mausers pared up against the Garand!!!

I think the Military should go back to the (proven)bolt action!!!!

It's about the weapon system and the man fireing and cleaning it!!!

Granted it has to be a good platform to start with(that said I have a 742 in ,243 that is the snittzel)!

The 742 is not a good platform for real heavy loads(a little too much over enginnering)!

I would say a R1A1 would be another good platform, but can you hunt with it??

.308 7.62X51 with the right loads I would!!!!!

Bob

My bar jammed on me in cold wet weather and then jammed again on the new owner in similar conditions.I can't comment on the new owner ,but I am meticulous at maintaining all of my guns,so it was not a maintenance issue.
