I have some high quality 30mm Sako rings that I'd like to keep on my rifle, but no scope to go with it, so I am looking for options. The rifle is a 338WM and I'm looking for a general purpose hunting scope for use up to 300yds. I prefer fixed power scopes, the lighter the better, and eye-relief comparable to Leupold's offerings (i.e. > 3.5"). Budget is up to $900. Leupold discontinued their Euro-30 series, and I don't believe they ever made fixed power scopes, so any pointers to what's available?

Brownell's has adapter sleeves that allow the use of 1" scopes with 30mm rings. You would have more choice in scopes going this route.

Sightron still have the S3 10x42 30mm tube. Thought they made them in a couple other powers but not seeing it on their site anymore. 19.40oz.

Sightron makes a 1-7x32. Might want to check that out. Falls within your price range. And it is a 30mm main tube. Check mystic precision at the top of the page.

Unless you need the additional MOA adjustment of a 30mm tube I'd just buy some new rings...especially if weight and bulk are a concern.

Wish I had known that before I passed on a some 30mm rings/bases:bangHead:

I know it seems kind of silly to buy a scope to suit your rings, so I do agree with you. The rings I have a EGW Sako rings, which are much nicer and lighter than the Optilocks. The rings came with the rifle and cost much more than I'd normally spend on rings, so I was hoping to use them.

That being said, I've checked out the 30mm offerings in 6x42 and compared to a Leupold FX3 6x42, I don't know if I can convince myself that it's a good value proposition --- the Leupold also consistently wins out on eye-relief. I also did a test fit of some 1" rings with a Leupold 6x36 and the eye line is perfect for my cheek weld. I close my eyes, shoulder the rifle, and the scope is nearly perfectly aligned. The 30mm are another 1/4" higher and I find myself having to raise my face slightly to get a good sight picture. That pretty much sealed the deal for me.

So with the lack of many choices of 30mm tubes in my price range and the compromise on cheek weld, I think it's a no brainer to stick to the 1" rings... and the good news is that I now have an excuse to pick up the FX3, which seems to be really well-liked.

Thanks for the input guys!
